Biography

Short Description

Ottaviano di Savona is known in onomastic terms as a male figure whose designation links him to Savona, a historic port and episcopal city on the Ligurian coast of northwestern Italy. The Italian personal name Ottaviano corresponds to the Latin Octavianus. In medieval documentary practice, a phrase of the type di Savona most often marked origin, long residence, or an ecclesiastical title connected with that place, but it does not by itself prove a birthplace, a family name, or a precise office. No year of birth or death that meets a strict standard of verification can be given from the major printed historical and hagiographical repertoires, and it would be improper to substitute the date of an episcopal appointment or other office, even if one were found, for a natal year.

The church history of Savona is comparatively well studied at the level of the diocese, the later combined see of Savona-Noli, and the city's relations with Genoa and with the papacy. Savona's cathedral, baptistery, and Marian shrine of Our Lady of Mercy belong to a long Christian presence in Liguria. Local bishops, canons, and members of religious houses appear in charters and in later antiquarian compilations. That institutional background, however, does not currently yield a securely identified biography for a saint, blessed, bishop, or lay notable who can be matched without doubt to the exact heading Ottaviano di Savona in the standard dictionaries of saints, the Roman Martyrology's better-known entries, or the usual catalogues of popes and Eastern patriarchs.

Caution is required because several better-documented men named Ottaviano or Octavianus are easily confused with a poorly attested Ligurian namesake. Pope John XII, born Octavianus, was a tenth-century Roman of the Tusculan line. The twelfth-century cardinal Ottaviano who took the name Victor IV as antipope is associated with the counts of Monticelli, not with Savona. A holy Octavian (Ottaviano) is venerated at Volterra in Tuscany, in a tradition that places him among African or Italian churchmen of late antiquity or the early Middle Ages; that cult is geographically and historically distinct from Savona. Franciscan and other mendicant calendars also include men named Otto or Ottone among early martyrs and friars, again without a verified Savonese identity that can be transferred to this subject.

In the absence of a checkable vita, liturgical proper, beatification or canonization decree, or a critical edition of a local legend, fields such as religious order, marriage, children, feast day, patronage, and place of burial must be left unspecified. There is no basis for listing this figure among the bishops of Rome or among the patriarchs of the Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Coptic, or Church of the East communions. The present notice therefore records only what the name and the demand for source-critical restraint allow: a man connected by designation with Savona in Liguria, whose life, cult, and dates remain, on presently available reliable authorities, insufficiently documented for a full hagiographical reconstruction.
