Biography

Short Description

Otto Neururer was born on 25 March 1882 in the mountain village of Piller in the Tyrol, then part of Austria-Hungary, the twelfth child of a poor farming family. His father died while Otto was still a boy, and his mother raised the children under hard rural conditions. He was physically frail from youth but was drawn to the priesthood. After schooling that included formation associated with the Vincentians, he entered the seminary at Brixen (Bressanone), the traditional seminary for the Tyrolean clergy, and was ordained a priest in 1907 for what became the Diocese of Innsbruck. He remained a diocesan priest rather than joining a religious order, and spent the following decades in ordinary pastoral work as a curate, teacher of religion, and, from the early 1930s, parish priest of Götzens near Innsbruck.

In Götzens he was known as a conscientious pastor, especially among the poor. After the Anschluss of March 1938, Nazi authorities tightly restricted the Church in Austria. Neururer came into direct conflict with the regime when he advised a young woman of the parish not to marry a man who was civilly divorced—and therefore, in Catholic teaching, still bound by a prior marriage—and who was also a Nazi Party member. The advice was a straightforward application of canon law on marriage, but the rejected suitor denounced the priest to the Gestapo. Neururer was arrested in December 1938 and accused of slander to the detriment of German marriage. After detention in Innsbruck he was sent in 1939 to the Dachau concentration camp and later transferred to Buchenwald.

In Buchenwald he continued, as far as camp conditions allowed, to exercise a priestly ministry among fellow prisoners. A prisoner asked to be received into the Catholic Church; Neururer instructed him and administered baptism. When camp authorities learned of this, he was consigned to the punishment bunker. He was hanged upside down, a torture associated with the bunker under the camp’s notorious overseers, and left in that position until he died on 30 May 1940. His body was cremated in the camp; no grave is known. He is often remembered among the earliest Catholic priests to die in the Nazi camp system.

Pope John Paul II beatified Otto Neururer on 24 November 1996, recognizing him as a martyr killed in hatred of the faith. His liturgical memorial is kept on 30 May. He is commemorated as a parish priest who would not compromise the Church’s teaching on marriage or abandon sacramental ministry even under a totalitarian regime, and as a representative figure of the Austrian clergy who resisted National Socialism at the cost of their lives.
