Biography

Short Description

Ottone Frangipane, known also as Oddone or Otto Frangipane, was a Roman noble of the eleventh and early twelfth centuries who became a monk and hermit and is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church. Traditional accounts place his birth in Rome in the mid-eleventh century, in the powerful Frangipane family, a baronial house that figured prominently in the politics of medieval Rome and in the fortunes of the papacy. Like other young aristocrats of his class, he was trained for war and spent his early life as a knight rather than in the cloister.

Hagiographical tradition relates that he was captured in the course of a military campaign and imprisoned. During that captivity he underwent a conversion, resolving to abandon worldly ambition and to serve God if he regained his liberty. After his release he is said to have gone on pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel on Monte Gargano in Apulia, a major shrine of southern Italy. He then withdrew from public life to seek solitude and penance.

He settled in the territory of Ariano, in the Irpinia region of Campania, corresponding to the modern town of Ariano Irpino. There he lived as a hermit in a cave or humble cell, following an austere routine of prayer and self-denial. Later writers often associate him with Benedictine monasticism, though surviving evidence for a formal profession in a particular house is thin. Local memory presents him as a counselor to those who sought him out and as a wonder-worker, but contemporary documentation of these years is scarce, as is typical for provincial hermits of the period.

Ottone died at Ariano on 23 March 1127. A cult developed at once among the townspeople. His relics were preserved and are kept in the cathedral of Ariano Irpino, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. He is honored as the principal patron saint of Ariano Irpino, and his feast is observed on 23 March. He was not the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or Tridentine type; his sainthood rests on long-standing popular and diocesan veneration, the ordinary path to recognition for many local saints of the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Beyond the outline of noble Roman origin, conversion from arms, pilgrimage, eremitical life, and death at Ariano, reliable biographical detail remains limited.
