Biography

Short Description

Ottorino Zanon was born on 9 August 1910 in San Pietro in Gu, in the province of Padua, in the Veneto region of northern Italy. He was formed for the priesthood in the diocese of Vicenza, a city historically associated with Saint Cajetan of Thiene, the sixteenth-century priest and reformer who founded the Theatines and was venerated as a saint of Divine Providence. Zanon was ordained a priest of that diocese and exercised his ministry in the Veneto during the interwar years, the Second World War, and the reconstruction that followed. He remained a celibate Catholic priest throughout his life and did not marry or have children.

Inspired by the example of Saint Cajetan, Zanon founded in the 1940s the Pia Società San Gaetano (Pious Society of Saint Cajetan), a clerical institute whose members lived in community, sought holiness in the priestly state, and dedicated themselves to apostolic work, especially parish ministry and the fostering of vocations. The society’s spirituality emphasized trust in Divine Providence, evangelical simplicity, and availability to the local Church. Zanon served as founder and superior, gathering the first companions, shaping the life of the community, and obtaining the ecclesiastical approvals that allowed the institute to take stable form. Its principal house was established in Vicenza.

Zanon spent the remainder of his life in the government and spiritual care of the society he had founded. He was not a bishop, a pope, or the head of an ancient patriarchal see, but a diocesan priest who became the father of a new priestly family. He died in Vicenza on 14 September 1977. Contemporary records of his life are chiefly those of his institute and of the Church of Vicenza rather than of a figure with a large public cult in his own lifetime.

After his death the Pia Società San Gaetano continued the priestly and pastoral work he had begun. A cause of beatification was introduced, and he is therefore remembered as a Servant of God. He has not been beatified or canonized by the Holy See, and he has no universal feast day or officially assigned patronages. His historical importance lies in the foundation of a twentieth-century priestly society under the patronage of Saint Cajetan and in a local reputation for priestly zeal and confidence in Providence.
