Biography

Short Description

Our Lady of the Way, known in Italian as Madonna della Strada or Santa Maria della Strada, is a title of the Blessed Virgin Mary attached to a venerated medieval fresco in Rome and, from the sixteenth century, to the Society of Jesus. The image shows the Virgin and Child and originally belonged to a small parish church in the centre of Rome dedicated to Santa Maria della Strada. Art historians generally date the fresco to the thirteenth or fourteenth century; its painter is unknown. The church stood on a busy thoroughfare, and the designation della Strada referred in the first instance to that urban setting rather than to a separate legendary apparition. The site was later occupied by the Church of the Gesù, the mother church of the Jesuits, where the fresco remains enshrined in a side chapel.

After Pope Paul III approved the Society of Jesus in 1540, Saint Ignatius of Loyola obtained the church of Santa Maria della Strada for the new order. The first Jesuits used the modest building as their principal church in Rome. Ignatius worshipped there until his death in 1556. Plans for a larger church advanced under Jesuit leadership and with the patronage of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese. The foundation stone of the Gesù was laid in 1568. Demolition of the old church required the salvage of the Madonna fresco, which was detached and, once the new church had risen, placed in the Chapel of the Madonna della Strada, on the right side of the nave as one faces the high altar.

The Jesuits adopted Our Lady of the Way as a special patroness of the Society. In the proper liturgical calendar of the Society of Jesus her feast is kept on 24 May. The Roman chapel became a focus of Jesuit prayer for vocations, missions, and safe travel, and copies of the image were carried to Jesuit houses and churches in Europe and in the overseas missions. A spiritual reading of the title as Mary who accompanies Christians on the way of discipleship, and travellers on the road, grew from both the street-name of the original church and the mobile character of Jesuit ministry.

Historical and hagiographical sources do not present Our Lady of the Way as a distinct person from Mary of Nazareth, the mother of Jesus according to the New Testament. No separate birth, death, or burial can be assigned to the title. What can be documented is the Roman shrine, the Jesuit appropriation of the church and image in the mid-sixteenth century, and the later spread of the devotion under that name. Precise biographical dates for Mary herself are not established by contemporary historical records; Christian tradition locates her life in first-century Galilee and Judea. The enduring identity of Our Lady of the Way is therefore that of a particular Marian cult, centred on a medieval Roman fresco and on the Society of Jesus, rather than that of an independent saint with a verifiable civil biography.
