Biography

Short Description

Pabo Post Prydain, whose epithet is usually rendered "Pillar of Britain," is a king of the Hen Ogledd (the Brittonic "Old North") who was later honoured as a saint in medieval Wales. He belongs to the poorly documented fifth and sixth centuries, when post-Roman British polities in what is now northern England and southern Scotland were under growing pressure from Anglian settlement. No contemporary chronicle, inscription, or letter names him. Knowledge of his career rests on later Welsh genealogical tracts—especially the Harleian genealogies and Bonedd Gwŷr y Gogledd (The Descent of the Men of the North)—on medieval Welsh calendars of saints, on the place-name and church dedication at Llanbabo in Anglesey, and on a fourteenth-century recumbent royal effigy in that church. Historians therefore treat him as a figure in whom dynastic memory, local cult, and legend have been combined, and they do not assign verified years of birth or death.

The genealogies place Pabo in the Coeling kindred descended from Coel Hen, the semi-legendary ancestor of several northern British dynasties. He is commonly given as a son of Ceneu ap Coel. The title Post Prydain implies that later tradition regarded him as a mainstay of British kingship or resistance, but the sources do not define the borders of any realm he ruled. Older antiquarian writing often associated his power with the Pennine region; that localisation remains conjectural. The same tracts ascribe to him several children who themselves became subjects of northern and Welsh tradition: Dunod Fawr (Dunod the Great), Sawyl Penuchel (Sawyl the Arrogant or High-headed), and Cerwyd, together with, in some later accounts, a daughter Arddun Benasgel, said to have married Brochwel Ysgithrog of Powys. The recording of dynastic heirs is the basis for treating him as married, although no wife is named in the principal genealogies.

Later hagiographical and local tradition holds that Pabo was expelled from his northern kingdom—an event older writers commonly linked to Anglian advance—and that he took refuge in Gwynedd, settling on Ynys Môn (Anglesey). There he is said to have founded, or to have been the patron of, the church of Llanbabo, whose name preserves his dedication. Inside the church a fourteenth-century stone effigy of a crowned figure bears a Latin inscription identifying the deceased as Pabo Post Prydain, which shows that a cult and a claim to his burial on the site were already well established in the later Middle Ages. Whether a historical northern king actually ended his life as a religious on Anglesey, or whether a king of the Old North and an Anglesey church-saint were originally distinct figures later fused, cannot be decided from the surviving evidence. No early Life of Pabo exists.

Medieval Wales commemorated him as a saint. Welsh calendars record his feast on 9 November. He was not canonised by a pope in the later, centralised sense; his honour belongs to the older insular pattern in which communities venerated royal ancestors, monks, and founders of churches without reference to Rome. Compilers such as Sabine Baring-Gould reconstructed his story from the genealogies, the Anglesey dedication, and the monument. Modern scholarship leaves his dates blank, notes the late and literary character of the sources, and values him chiefly as evidence of how Welsh communities remembered the lost kingdoms of the North and sanctified their princely dead. His principal cult site remains the church of Llanbabo on Anglesey.
