Biography

Short Description

Pachomius, known in Coptic as Pachom or Pakhom and in later tradition as Pachomius the Great, was a fourth-century Egyptian monk and the principal founder of Christian cenobitic monasticism, that is, monastic life organized in community under a shared rule rather than in purely solitary eremitical withdrawal. He was born of pagan parents in Upper Egypt, in the Thebaid, and is associated in the Coptic Lives with the town of Esna (ancient Latopolis). Exact birth and childhood dates are not independently documented; later tradition places his birth near the end of the third century. As a young man he was conscripted into the Roman army, a common imperial practice in that period. While detained with other recruits he was struck by the charity of local Christians who brought food and comfort to the soldiers. After his discharge he sought Christian instruction and received baptism, then resolved on an ascetic life.

He withdrew into the desert and became the disciple of the hermit Palamon (Palaemon) in the region of Tabennisi on the Nile. After a period of austere eremitical training, the early Lives report that he received a divine command—often described as an angelic vision—to gather monks into a communal monastery. He established his first coenobium at Tabennisi, generally dated to the early 320s. The community grew quickly. Pachomius then founded a federation of houses in Upper Egypt, of which the great monastery at Pbow (also Pabau or Phbow) became the administrative and spiritual centre. A community for women, associated with his sister Mary, was also organized, so that the Pachomian system included both male and female houses under related discipline. By the end of his life the network is described as comprising several male monasteries and two female communities, with a population numbered in the thousands.

The Rule attributed to Pachomius is the earliest surviving Christian monastic rule. It grouped monks into houses according to their crafts, prescribed common prayer, meals, and manual labour, and regulated clothing, silence, fasting, and the reception of postulants. Literacy and the memorization of Scripture were expected. Authority was exercised through a hierarchy of house-masters under the father of the whole congregation, with Pbow as the mother house. Pachomius himself is generally held not to have been ordained to the priesthood and to have remained a lay abbot. His organization differed from the purely eremitical model associated with Antony of Egypt: monks lived, worked, and prayed in common, yet still under a severe ascetic code. The Rule later influenced Basil of Caesarea in the Greek East and, through Jerome’s Latin translation, the monastic legislation of the Latin West, including Benedict of Nursia.

Pachomius died during an epidemic, according to the traditional chronology on 9 May 348, at Pbow, and was buried at that monastery. His memory was preserved in Sahidic and Bohairic Coptic Lives, in Greek recensions, and in Jerome’s Latin version. He is venerated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox (including Coptic), and Roman Catholic Churches. In the West his feast is kept on 9 May; the Byzantine calendar commemorates him on 15 May, and the Coptic Church on 14 Pashons. He was never Bishop of Rome or Coptic Pope of Alexandria, nor patriarch of any autocephalous see. As a monk from the time of his conversion he lived in celibacy and is not recorded as having married or had children. His historical importance rests on the creation of a durable communal monastic institution in fourth-century Egypt, which became a pattern for later Christian monasticism in both East and West.
