Biography

Short Description

Saint Pachomius of Nerekhta (Russian: Pakhomii Nerekhtskii) was a fourteenth-century monastic founder in northeastern Rus'. He was born in Vladimir, then a leading princely and ecclesiastical city of the Vladimir-Suzdal lands, in the family of a priest. No reliable source records the year of his birth. Hagiographical tradition states that from childhood he was drawn to prayer and the monastic life. He received the tonsure at the Monastery of the Nativity of the Theotokos in Vladimir, taking the name Pachomius, and was formed there in the cenobitic life.

Seeking a stricter discipline than that of an urban monastery, he later went to the Trinity Monastery of Saint Sergius of Radonezh, the principal center of the fourteenth-century Russian monastic revival. There he became a disciple of Sergius. After a period under Sergius’s direction, and with his blessing, Pachomius left to found a new house in a more remote region, following a pattern common among Sergius’s spiritual children who carried the Trinity monastic tradition into the northern and northeastern lands of Rus'.

He settled near the town of Nerekhta in the Kostroma lands, on a small watercourse called the Sypanov (Sypanovo). In the second half of the fourteenth century he established a monastery dedicated to the Holy Trinity, clearing forest, building a wooden church, and gathering a small brotherhood of which he became the first abbot. The house later bore his name as the Trinity-Sypanov Pachomius-Nerekhta Monastery. Traditional accounts associate a well at the site with his labors and describe his life as one of austerity and liturgical regularity. Contemporary charters or chronicles that would independently confirm these details are lacking; the narrative depends on later hagiographical compilations.

The traditional date of his death is 15 May 1384. He was buried in the monastery he had founded. Local veneration grew at his tomb. He was numbered among the saints glorified for general church veneration at the Moscow Council of 1549 under Metropolitan Macarius. His principal feast in the Russian Orthodox Church is 15 May; he is also commemorated with other saints of the Rostov-Yaroslavl region. Later tradition reported his relics as incorrupt. The monastery continued, with interruptions, as the center of his cult.
