Biography

Short Description

Pachomius the Great, known in Coptic as Pakhom, was born about 292 in Upper Egypt, most probably at Esna (ancient Latopolis) in the Thebaid, to parents who followed the traditional Egyptian religion. As a young man he was conscripted into the Roman army. While he and other recruits were detained at Thebes, local Christians brought them food and other aid. Their charity so impressed him that, after his discharge, he sought Christian instruction and was baptized at Chenoboskion (Sheneset). He then withdrew from ordinary life to practice asceticism.

For some years he lived as the disciple of the hermit Palamon, sharing the eremitical round of prayer, fasting, and manual work that marked the early Egyptian desert tradition. The Pachomian Lives relate that he then received a divine calling, often described as an angelic vision, to gather monks into a community under a common rule rather than in solitude. About 320 he founded a monastery at Tabennisi (Tabenna) on the east bank of the Nile. That foundation is generally regarded as the beginning of Christian cenobitic monasticism: monks sharing a common life (koinos bios), common property, common meals, and a structured pattern of work and liturgical prayer under an abbot.

The community expanded quickly. Pachomius organized a federation, or koinonia, of houses bound by one rule and a central superior. He established further monasteries, including the large house at Pbow (Pabau), which became the administrative centre of the congregation. By his death the koinonia included several monasteries for men and at least two communities of women; his sister Mary is credited with founding a convent near Tabennisi. The Pachomian rule, preserved in Coptic and in a Latin version made by Jerome, governed clothing, meals, labour, the reception of newcomers, and the memorization of Scripture. Monks were grouped in houses according to their trades, practised agriculture and crafts, and combined communal liturgy with private prayer. Literacy and recitation of biblical texts were strongly encouraged.

In later life Pachomius governed this network, visiting the houses and maintaining the discipline of the koinonia. He died of an infectious disease, often identified as plague, on 9 May 348 at Pbow, after designating successors. He held no episcopal or patriarchal office, but his model of organized communal monasticism proved highly influential. It shaped later Egyptian monasticism and, through figures such as Basil of Caesarea and Benedict of Nursia, the development of monastic rules in both East and West. He is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Oriental Orthodox churches.
