Biography

Short Description

Paisius Velichkovsky, known in the world as Pyotr Ivanovich Velichkovsky, was born in 1722 in Poltava, then in the Cossack Hetmanate. He came from a clerical family: his father Ivan served as a priest at the Dormition Cathedral in Poltava, and after being widowed his mother Irina entered monastic life. Raised in a pious household, he received early schooling locally and then studied at the Kiev Mohyla Academy, the principal Orthodox school of the Ukrainian lands. Finding the academy’s Latinizing scholastic curriculum poorly suited to the inner life he sought, he left his studies while still in his teens and began a prolonged search for authentic monastic practice, moving among houses in Ukraine and then into the Romanian principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia, where he encountered living hesychast tradition, including the circle of the elder Basil of Poiana Mărului.

In the 1740s he went to Mount Athos, where he was tonsured with the name Paisius and gradually gathered a large, multiethnic brotherhood devoted to unceasing prayer and the study of the Greek ascetic Fathers. He and his disciples copied and translated manuscripts, recovering texts of the Philokalic corpus that had become rare in the Slavic world. Poverty, overcrowding, and difficulties with Ottoman fiscal demands and with other Athonite communities led him, in the early 1760s, to accept the invitation of the Metropolitan of Moldavia to settle with his monks at Dragomirna. When the Habsburg monarchy annexed Bukovina, the community was forced to leave Dragomirna; after a sojourn at Secu they were established at Neamț Monastery, which under Paisius became a major center of Orthodox monasticism, numbering at its height several hundred monks of Slavic, Romanian, and other origins.

At Neamț he ordered the common life around the liturgical cycle, obedience, and the Jesus Prayer, while directing a scriptorium and translation workshop of unusual scale. His Church Slavonic version of the Philokalia, known as the Dobrotoliubie and printed in Moscow in 1793, together with versions of writings by Isaac the Syrian, Nil Sorsky, and other masters, became the principal vehicle by which hesychast spirituality re-entered Russian and Slavic Orthodoxy. Disciples carried his method into Russia, where it later informed the elders of Optina Pustyn and a broad nineteenth-century revival of inner prayer. Paisius himself corresponded with hierarchs in Russia and was widely regarded as a starets, though he never held episcopal office.

He died at Neamț Monastery in 1794 and was buried there. The Russian Orthodox Church glorified him as a saint in 1988, during the celebrations of the millennium of the Baptism of Rus’; he is likewise venerated in the Romanian, Ukrainian, and other Orthodox churches, with his feast observed on 15 November. Later generations have remembered him as a restorer of Athonite-style monasticism in the Carpathian and Slavic lands and as the chief transmitter of the Philokalic tradition to the modern Orthodox world.
