Biography

Short Description

Palaemon, also rendered Palamon or Palemon in Coptic and Latin sources, was a Christian hermit of Upper Egypt who lived in the early fourth century. He belongs to the generation of Desert Fathers who withdrew into the Thebaid in the decades after the peace of the Church. Almost all that is known of him derives from the various Greek, Coptic, and Arabic recensions of the Life of Pachomius, in which Palaemon appears as the austere anchorite who formed the future organizer of cenobitic monasticism. No record of his parentage, birthplace, or life before his retreat into the desert has been preserved. He is consistently presented as an Egyptian who had already attained a reputation for holiness and severity when Pachomius sought him.

After his baptism at Chenoboskion, Pachomius, a former pagan conscript who had encountered Christian charity while in military custody, resolved to become a monk. He found Palaemon living in a cell in the desert and asked to be received as a disciple. Palaemon at first declined, warning that the eremitical life demanded perpetual fasting, nights without sleep, and unremitting manual labor. Only after Pachomius demonstrated perseverance did Palaemon accept him. The two men lived together for several years, occupying themselves with the weaving of rush mats, the recitation of large portions of Scripture, and prolonged standing in prayer. Palaemon’s diet is described as consisting of bread, salt, and water, taken sparingly.

While still under Palaemon’s direction, Pachomius received what the hagiographers present as a divine command to establish a monastery in which many brothers could live a common life under a rule. Palaemon, remaining personally committed to solitude, nevertheless blessed the undertaking. Pachomius founded the community at Tabennisi on the Nile. Palaemon continued to inhabit his desert cell in the neighborhood and is said to have visited the new foundation. He died in the first half of the fourth century; the sources state that Pachomius himself buried his spiritual father. No exact year of death is recorded in the earliest documents.

Palaemon left no writings of his own, and later independent historical notices are absent. His cult is maintained principally in the Coptic Orthodox Church, where he is remembered as a father of the monastic movement. In the broader history of Christian monasticism he represents the eremitical root from which Pachomian cenobitism grew. Because the only substantial narratives about him are contained in texts whose primary purpose is the glorification of Pachomius, modern historians treat the details of Palaemon’s life with caution while accepting the core fact of his role as Pachomius’s teacher in the Egyptian desert.
