Biography

Short Description

Palatias, whose name also appears in Latin as Palatia, is an early Christian martyr commemorated jointly with her companion Laurentia. The Roman Martyrology records them on 8 October and locates their suffering at Ancona, a port city on the Adriatic coast of Italy, in the persecution associated with the emperor Diocletian and under a governor named Dion. The martyrology states that the two women were first sent into exile and were afterwards consumed by fire. No contemporary administrative record, inscription, or eyewitness account of Palatias has survived, and she is known almost entirely through this liturgical notice and through later hagiographical narrative.

Medieval and early modern legend presents Palatias as a woman of high social standing connected with Ancona, sometimes described as a noble or wealthy matron. Laurentia is depicted as her slave, servant, or nurse who was already a Christian and who instructed Palatias in the Christian faith, leading to her conversion. After their adherence to Christianity became known, they were denounced to the authorities, interrogated, subjected to torments, exiled, and finally put to death by burning. These episodes belong to the conventional pattern of late antique martyr acts and cannot be confirmed independently. The historical relationship between the two women, and even the precise circumstances of their deaths, remain uncertain.

The cult of Palatias and Laurentia is tied to the Marche region of central Italy. Ancona is the place named in the martyrology; some later local traditions also associate the saints with Fermo, another city in the same region, perhaps through relic translation or the growth of a secondary cult. Their feast day is 8 October. Palatias is not recorded as a member of any religious order, nor as holding episcopal, patriarchal, or papal office. Reliable sources do not preserve her year of birth, her parentage, or documented information about a husband or children.

Because Palatias belongs to the large group of early martyrs whose memory was kept alive in calendars and local devotion rather than in securely dated historical dossiers, modern scholarship treats the Diocletianic setting as traditional rather than as a precisely established chronology. The distinction between the ancient core of veneration at Ancona and the later legendary expansion of her story should be maintained. She is remembered in Catholic tradition as a companion martyr of Laurentia and as a figure of regional Christian memory in Ancona and the surrounding Italian Marche.
