Biography

Short Description

Pamphilus of Caesarea was a Christian presbyter, biblical scholar, and martyr of the late third and early fourth centuries. He was born in Berytus (modern Beirut) in Phoenicia, into a distinguished and wealthy family. After receiving a thorough education in his native city, he studied at the catechetical school of Alexandria under Pierius, a teacher in the tradition of Origen. Formed by that scholarly and ascetic milieu, he later settled at Caesarea Maritima in Roman Palestine, where Bishop Agapius ordained him a presbyter. He gave away much of his inherited property to the poor and thereafter lived a simple, disciplined life devoted to Scripture, teaching, and the collection of books.

At Caesarea, Pamphilus assembled one of the most important Christian libraries of antiquity. He gathered, copied, and corrected biblical manuscripts and the writings of earlier Christian authors, above all those of Origen, whose Hexapla and other works he helped to preserve. Ancient notices report that he transcribed many of Origen’s books with his own hand. The library became a major centre of Christian learning; later scholars, including Jerome, made use of its holdings. Pamphilus also conducted a school in which young men were trained in sacred learning and in a philosophical manner of life. His closest associate was Eusebius, the future bishop of Caesarea and church historian, who so revered him that he was known as Eusebius Pamphili, “Eusebius, [spiritual] son of Pamphilus.”

Together Pamphilus and Eusebius composed a five-book Apology for Origen, of which only the first book survives, in the Latin translation of Rufinus of Aquileia. Eusebius also wrote a Life of Pamphilus in three books, now lost except for fragments and later notices. These works, together with Eusebius’s contemporary account in the Martyrs of Palestine, are the principal sources for Pamphilus’s career. Writers of the period uniformly praise his learning, generosity, and care for the text of Scripture. He was not a bishop, nor the holder of any patriarchal or Roman see; his rank in the church was that of presbyter, and his influence was that of a teacher and textual scholar rather than of a hierarchical office-holder.

During the persecution begun under Diocletian and continued in the East under Maximinus Daia, Pamphilus was arrested in the fifth year of the persecution, about 307, and tortured. He remained in prison at Caesarea for a prolonged period, during which he continued to encourage fellow Christians and to work, with Eusebius, on the defense of Origen. On 16 February 309 he was beheaded by order of the governor Firmilianus, together with companions who included the deacon Valens and others imprisoned with him or who associated themselves with his confession. Eusebius, who knew him intimately, recorded the circumstances of his imprisonment and death. He was honoured as a martyr from that time. His library continued to serve the church of Caesarea for generations and played a significant role in the transmission of Origen’s works and of carefully copied Greek biblical texts. He is commemorated on 16 February in the East; in the Roman Martyrology the group of Palestinian martyrs associated with him is entered on 1 June.
