Biography

Short Description

Pancras of Rome, known in Latin as Pancratius, is venerated as a Christian martyr of the city of Rome in the early fourth century. Contemporary records of his life do not survive. The biographical particulars that became standard in the Middle Ages rest on a Latin passio whose date and reliability are uncertain and which modern hagiographers treat as largely legendary. That narrative states that he was born in Phrygia, in Asia Minor, to a family of Roman citizens. Left an orphan, he was brought to Rome by an uncle named Dionysius. In the capital he and his uncle embraced Christianity and received baptism.

The passio sets his death in the persecution ordered by the emperor Diocletian. Pancras is described as a boy of fourteen who was arrested and commanded to offer sacrifice to the gods. According to the legend the emperor himself, struck by the youth's composure, tried to win him with promises of riches and rank. Pancras refused, confessed Christ, and was beheaded on the Via Aurelia, west of the city, on 12 May, a date the tradition assigns to the year 304. A Christian woman named Ottavilla is said to have claimed the body and buried it in a cemetery beside the same road.

Independent of the legendary acts, the cult of Pancras in Rome is historically well attested from the late fifth and early sixth centuries. Pope Symmachus, who reigned from 498 to 514, built or rebuilt a basilica over the martyr's tomb on the Via Aurelia, the church known as San Pancrazio fuori le mura. Pope Gregory the Great knew the shrine and the monastery associated with it, and Gregory of Tours also refers to the saint. These notices confirm that by about the year 500 Pancras was honoured as a Roman martyr with a prominent suburban basilica, even if they do not corroborate the details of the passio.

From Rome the cult spread widely in the early Middle Ages. In England, Augustine of Canterbury dedicated a church to Pancras shortly after the mission of 597, and the saint's name later attached to an important parish in London. On the Continent he was numbered among the Ice Saints of central European folklore, whose mid-May feasts were linked with the danger of late frost. In the Roman rite his feast has been observed on 12 May, frequently in conjunction with the martyrs Nereus and Achilleus. He has been invoked as a patron of children and of those bound by oaths, and against false witness, perjury, cramp, and headache.

Because the passio cannot be confirmed by earlier or independent evidence, historians accept Pancras as a genuine martyr of Rome, most probably of the Diocletianic persecution, while regarding his Phrygian origin, his age, and the dialogue with the emperor as unhistorical embellishment. The location of his tomb on the Via Aurelia, the early papal basilica, and the rapid diffusion of his feast remain the secure facts of his afterlife in Christian memory.
