Biography

Short Description

Paola Renata Carboni was an Italian Catholic laywoman of the early twentieth century whose short life and reputation for holiness later led to the opening of a cause for beatification. She was born on 6 February 1908 in Alatri, in the province of Frosinone in Lazio, then part of the Kingdom of Italy. Raised in a practicing Catholic family in a town with a long Christian past, she received the sacraments of initiation and the kind of education then customary for a girl of her milieu. Recollections gathered after her death describe a lively, intelligent, and affectionate child who combined ordinary youthful interests with an unusually serious interior life of prayer.

In adolescence she became active in Catholic Action, the organized lay apostolate strongly encouraged in Italy during the pontificates of Pius X and Pius XI. She felt drawn at one point toward religious life and missionary work, but chronic frailty of health made that path impossible. She therefore sought holiness in the lay state, frequenting the sacraments, practicing works of charity, and accepting illness as a form of participation in the Passion of Christ. She kept a diary and wrote letters that later became the principal documentary basis for reconstructing her spiritual development. Those writings, together with the testimony of family, friends, and clergy, present a young woman of cheerfulness, generosity toward the poor and the sick, and a growing Eucharistic and sacrificial spirituality.

In the mid-1920s she contracted pulmonary tuberculosis, a disease that medical treatment of the period could seldom halt. She spent her last months of illness in Rome, where she continued to write and to offer her sufferings for the Church. She died there on 11 September 1927 at the age of nineteen. News of her death and of her reputation for virtue spread in Alatri and in Roman ecclesiastical circles. A popular devotion developed around her memory, and favors were attributed to her intercession.

A diocesan inquiry into her life, virtues, and reputation for holiness was subsequently introduced, and she is numbered among the Servants of God of the Catholic Church. She has not been beatified or canonized and has no universally recognized feast day or official patronages. Because she died so young and left only a modest body of private writings, independent historical documentation beyond hagiographical and diocesan materials remains limited. Her figure belongs to the wider current of youthful lay candidates for sainthood in early twentieth-century Italy, a current that emphasized the universal call to holiness and the spiritual value of suffering offered in union with Christ.
