Biography

Short Description

The martyr known in Eastern Christian tradition as Papas (sometimes rendered Papa) is remembered as a native of Laranda in Lycaonia, a district of central Asia Minor under Roman rule. Surviving notices of his life come almost exclusively from later Byzantine synaxaria rather than from any contemporary document. Those notices give no information about his family, occupation, or the date of his birth, and they do not indicate whether he was a cleric or a layman. He is simply presented as a Christian living in the closing decades of the third century, when imperial policy toward the Church oscillated between local harassment and organized persecution.

According to the traditional account, Papas was arrested during the reign of the emperor Maximian after he refused to take part in the required sacrifices to the pagan gods. He was examined by a magistrate, remained firm in his confession of Christ, and was then subjected to a series of tortures. One recurrent detail in the legend is that iron shoes fitted with nails were forced onto his feet and that he was compelled to walk a long distance in them. Further beatings followed. In a scene that became the most distinctive element of his cult, he was finally bound to a withered tree; the tree is said to have burst into leaf and fruit as a sign of divine favor.

Papas died of the injuries inflicted on him. Neither the precise year nor the exact place of death is recorded in any source that can be independently verified, nor is the site of his burial known. The events are customarily assigned to the period of the Tetrarchy, but the hagiographical narrative itself cannot be dated more closely than the late third or very early fourth century. No Latin martyrology of the early medieval period includes him, and he never acquired a significant cult in the Western Church.

In the Byzantine liturgical calendar he is commemorated on 14 November. Because the only accounts of his passion were compiled centuries after the events they purport to describe, it is impossible to separate a historical kernel from later legendary expansion. Papas therefore remains one of the many local martyrs of Asia Minor whose memory was preserved in the liturgical books of the Christian East but who left no trace in the documentary record of the Roman state or in early ecclesiastical historians. No specific patronages of places, professions, or causes are attested in the standard sources.
