Biography

Short Description

Saint Paraskeva of the Balkans, also known as Saint Petka, Paraskeva the New, Paraskeva of Tarnovo, and Cuvioasa Parascheva of Iași, was an Eastern Orthodox ascetic of the tenth and eleventh centuries. She was born in the town of Epivates (modern Selimpaşa, Turkey) on the Sea of Marmara, in the European hinterland of Constantinople, then within the Byzantine Empire. Hagiographical tradition describes her family as prosperous and pious and records a brother, Euthymius, who became a monk and later bishop of Madytos. From childhood she was attracted to evangelical poverty. A central episode of her Life states that at about the age of ten she heard in church Christ’s words, “Whoever wants to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me,” after which she began giving her clothing to the poor.

Upon the death of her parents she distributed her inheritance and left home for a monastic life. She spent time in Constantinople and in Bithynia, including several years in a convent associated with Heraclea Pontica, then withdrew to the desert of the Jordan for a period of eremitical solitude, prayer, and fasting. Medieval accounts, notably the fourteenth-century Life written by Patriarch Euthymius of Tarnovo, relate that an angel commanded her to return to her native region. She settled again near Epivates and continued a hidden ascetic life until her death, which tradition places at about twenty-seven years of age. She was buried at the Church of the Holy Apostles in Epivates; her relics were later found incorrupt and became a focus of local veneration.

The later translations of those relics made her one of the principal saints of the Orthodox Balkans. In 1231 Tsar Ivan Asen II of Bulgaria brought them to the Church of the Forty Holy Martyrs in Tarnovo, capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, where she was honored as a heavenly protectress of the state. After the Ottoman conquest of Tarnovo in 1393 the relics were moved, reaching Belgrade by the end of the fourteenth century. When Belgrade fell in 1521 they were taken to Constantinople. In 1641 the Moldavian prince Vasile Lupu obtained them from the Ecumenical Patriarchate and enshrined them in Iași, first at the Monastery of the Three Holy Hierarchs and subsequently in the Metropolitan Cathedral, where they remain. The feast-day pilgrimage on 14 October is among the largest in Romania.

Paraskeva is commemorated on 14 October in the Eastern Orthodox calendar and is widely venerated in Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, North Macedonia, and Greece. In Romanian usage she is Cuvioasa Parascheva, patron of Moldavia and of the city of Iași; Slavic churches know her as Sveta Petka, a calque of the Greek name Paraskeva (“Friday”). Her cult, shaped by Euthymius’s Life and by the political history of the relic translations, became a marker of religious identity for medieval Balkan polities and remains central to popular Orthodox devotion in the region.
