Biography

Short Description

Saint Paraskevi of Rome, also rendered Parasceva or Paraskeva, is a Christian virgin and martyr whose cult is rooted in the second century of the Roman Empire and who is especially venerated in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Hagiographical tradition states that she was born in Rome around the middle of the second century to Christian parents named Agathon and Politia. The couple had been childless for many years and regarded her birth as an answer to prayer. She received the name Paraskevi, which in Greek means Friday, because she was born on that weekday, a day already associated by Christians with the crucifixion of Jesus. Her parents, described as people of means and piety, instructed her in the Christian scriptures and in the learning of her time. After their deaths, when she was about twenty years of age, she is said to have given her inheritance to the poor and to have taken up a life of itinerant preaching rather than marriage.

According to the martyr acts that preserve her legend, Paraskevi’s public proclamation of Christianity led to her arrest during the reign of the emperor Antoninus Pius, who ruled from 138 to 161. The narratives describe a succession of tortures intended to force her to sacrifice to the Roman gods. She refused. One of the most frequently retold episodes holds that she was thrown into a cauldron of boiling oil and pitch; a drop of the liquid struck the emperor and blinded him. Paraskevi then prayed and restored his sight, after which Antoninus Pius released her and, in some versions, moderated his policy toward Christians. The story belongs to the common stock of late antique miracle motifs and is not corroborated by contemporary imperial sources.

Released, she resumed preaching and traveled beyond Rome. She was later arrested again by a local governor named Tarasius (Tarasios in Greek sources). After further ordeals—including, in various recensions, a red-hot helmet, confinement, and renewed pressure to apostatize—she was beheaded. Traditional synaxaria date her death to about 170, in the period of Marcus Aurelius, but they do not agree on a precise city of martyrdom, and no independent Roman record confirms the event. Modern historians therefore treat the biography as a pious legend that grew around the veneration of a Roman martyr of this name, rather than as a document that can be verified in detail. She is distinct from other saints called Paraskevi or Paraskeva, including Paraskeva of Iconium and the later Balkan saint known as Petka or Paraskeva of the Balkans, with whom she is sometimes confused in popular devotion.

Her feast is kept on 26 July in the Eastern Orthodox calendar. In icons she commonly appears as a woman holding a cross, a scroll, or a vessel containing eyes, the last of these attributes reflecting both the miracle of healing the emperor and her long-standing role as a heavenly intercessor for those afflicted in their sight. She is invoked as a patron of the blind and of people suffering from diseases of the eyes. Churches and chapels dedicated to her are widespread in Greece, Cyprus, the Balkans, and among Eastern Christian diaspora communities. Because she belongs to the era of the pre-congregational saints, there is no recorded act of papal canonization in the later medieval or modern sense; her sanctity was recognized through liturgical commemoration and popular cult. Relics and wonder-working icons associated with her name are claimed by a number of churches, though the original place of burial is not historically established.
