Biography

Short Description

Saint Parisius (Italian: Parisio) was a Camaldolese monk of northern Italy whose memory is preserved chiefly in later medieval and early modern hagiography rather than in contemporary archival records. Tradition places his birth in Bologna in or about 1160. At about the age of twelve he is said to have received the Camaldolese habit. The Camaldolese congregation, founded by Saint Romuald of Ravenna in the early eleventh century, united Benedictine communal life with eremitical solitude and was known for liturgical solemnity and ascetic discipline. Houses of the order existed in Emilia and the Veneto by the twelfth century, and it was in that setting that Parisius began his religious life.

He was subsequently sent to the monastery of Santa Cristina in Treviso, in the March of Treviso in the Veneto. There he served as sacristan, charged with the care of the monastic church, its altars, relics, vestments, and sacred vessels, and with supporting the daily round of Mass and the Divine Office. Hagiographical sources claim that he remained in this office for some seventy years or more. During that long service he gained a local reputation among the monks and the townspeople of Treviso for humility, fidelity to prayer, and miraculous help. Almost every particular of this Trevisan period—the exact length of his tenure, the miracles attributed to him, and the details of his daily observance—derives from later commemorative accounts rather than from documents of his own lifetime.

The same tradition reports that Parisius died at Treviso in 1267. Combined with a birth year of about 1160, this would make him more than a century old at death, a claim that belongs as much to pious legend as to verifiable chronology. After his death his body was venerated at Santa Cristina. His cult remained essentially local, which was typical of many thirteenth-century monastic figures who were never the object of a formal papal process of canonization. In Camaldolese calendars and in some local Italian usage his feast has been kept on 11 June. He is remembered as a model of hidden, persevering monastic service rather than as a founder, bishop, or missionary, and the scarcity of early sources requires that the traditional dates and miracle stories be treated with caution even while the outline of a Bolognese youth who became a Camaldolese monk and spent a lifetime at Treviso remains consistent across the accounts that survive.
