Biography

Short Description

Parmenas (Greek: Parmenās) is known from the New Testament as one of the Seven chosen to serve the early Christian community in Jerusalem. According to Acts 6:1–6, a dispute arose when the Hellenists (Greek-speaking Jewish Christians) complained that their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food, in contrast to the widows of the Hebrews (Aramaic-speaking Jewish Christians). The Twelve Apostles declined to abandon prayer and the ministry of the word in order to wait on tables, and they instructed the community to select seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom. Parmenas was named among those seven, together with Stephen, Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch. The community presented them to the apostles, who prayed and laid hands on them. This episode, commonly placed in the early 30s of the first century in Jerusalem, is the scriptural origin of the ordered diaconate. The canonical Acts of the Apostles does not mention Parmenas again.

His Greek name indicates that he almost certainly belonged to the Hellenistic Jewish Christian circle whose grievance had prompted the appointment. Beyond that inference, the New Testament supplies no information about his family, birthplace, or later life. Later ecclesiastical tradition, especially in the Christian East, numbered him among the Seventy Apostles referred to in Luke 10. Hagiographical writers held that after serving in Jerusalem he preached in Asia Minor. Some accounts call him bishop of Soli, a see that later sources associate either with Soli on Cyprus or with Soli in Cilicia; that episcopal identification is not found in the earliest Christian literature and remains legendary rather than historically demonstrated. No contemporary extra-biblical document independently attests his career after the events described in Acts. Whether he was married or had children is unknown; Scripture is silent, and later sources do not provide reliable evidence.

Western and Eastern martyrological tradition agrees that Parmenas died a martyr. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 23 January at Philippi in Macedonia, stating that he faithfully discharged the office of preaching entrusted to him and obtained the glory of martyrdom under the emperor Trajan. Later summaries often give the year as 98, the first year of Trajan’s reign (98–117). Eastern Orthodox tradition likewise remembers him as having suffered in Macedonia and keeps his memory on 4 January among the Seventy Apostles and on 28 July with others of the Seven Deacons (commonly Prochorus, Nicanor, and Timon). These details of place, date, and imperial persecution are pious tradition; they are not corroborated by first- or second-century historical writers, and the year 98 should be treated as conventional rather than as a documented fact. Nothing reliable is known of his burial place. Like other apostolic-era saints, he entered the calendars by ancient cult rather than by a medieval papal process of canonization or beatification.

Parmenas is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, and other historic churches that retain the sanctoral memory of the Seven Deacons. He is not recorded as pope or as patriarch of any Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Coptic, or Church of the East see, nor as a member of a later religious order. Specific patronages of places, professions, illnesses, or causes are not firmly attached to his name in the principal martyrologies. His enduring importance in Christian memory is therefore modest and precise: he stands in Acts as a named member of the first body of deacons, a Hellenistic Jewish Christian entrusted with the church’s organized charity, and, in later devotion, as a preacher and martyr of the apostolic age. The scarcity of verifiable biographical data is itself a reminder of how little the New Testament and the earliest historians chose to record about most of the Seven besides Stephen and Philip.
