Biography

Short Description

Paschal Baylón was born in 1540 in Torrehermosa, in the Kingdom of Aragon in present-day Spain, the son of Martín Baylón and Isabel Jubera, poor peasant farmers. From an early age he worked as a shepherd. Though he received little formal schooling, he taught himself to read so that he could use prayer books and accounts of the saints. Those who knew him in youth described a marked piety, especially a devotion to the Mass and to the Eucharist reserved in the tabernacle. He was accustomed to pray at length in the fields and to give alms from his own scant resources.

In 1564 he entered the Alcantarine reform of the Order of Friars Minor—the Discalced Friars of the Strict Observance associated with Peter of Alcántara—as a lay brother, at the convent of Santa María de Loreto in Orito in the Kingdom of Valencia. He remained a brother rather than seeking the priesthood and served in humble offices as porter, cook, gardener, and questor for the community. He was remembered for strict poverty, obedience, and charity toward the poor who came to the friary door.

His interior life was dominated by devotion to the Eucharist. He assisted at Mass with deep recollection, spent long hours in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, and was reputed to have received mystical graces including ecstasies. In the 1570s he was sent as a messenger through parts of southern France then affected by Huguenot-Catholic conflict. When challenged on the doctrine of the Real Presence, he defended it and was beaten and stoned, but he survived and returned to Spain. Later devotion styled him the seraph of the Eucharist.

Baylón spent his last years at the Franciscan convent in Villarreal in the Kingdom of Valencia and died there on 17 May 1592. A cult grew at once; miracles were reported at his tomb, and his body was said to be incorrupt. Pope Paul V beatified him in 1618 and Pope Alexander VIII canonized him in 1690. In 1897 Pope Leo XIII declared him patron of Eucharistic congresses and of Eucharistic associations. His feast is observed on 17 May. In 1936, during the Spanish Civil War, his tomb at Villarreal was desecrated and most of the relics were destroyed; surviving fragments are kept at the Real Monasterio de San Pascual in Villarreal, which continues as a pilgrimage site.
