Biography

Short Description

Paschasius Radbertus was a Carolingian theologian, abbot, and writer of the ninth century, principally associated with the Abbey of Corbie in Picardy in the Frankish realms. Tradition holds that he was abandoned as an infant and found at the convent of Notre-Dame in Soissons, where he was raised by the nuns. He later entered the Benedictine monastery of Corbie and was formed under abbots Adalard and Wala, both of whom were closely connected to the Carolingian court. These ties situated him within the leading ecclesiastical and political circles of the age.

He became a teacher in the monastic school at Corbie and took part in the establishment of the daughter house of Corvey in Saxony. In the 840s he was elected abbot of Corbie, holding office during the turbulent years after the Treaty of Verdun and the civil conflicts among the heirs of Louis the Pious. He resigned the abbacy around 851, withdrew for a time to Saint-Riquier, and eventually returned to Corbie as an ordinary monk, devoting his remaining years to study and composition.

His most influential work is the treatise De Corpore et Sanguine Domini, written in the early 830s for the community at Corvey. It offered the first extended Latin discussion of the Eucharist and argued strongly for the real, substantial presence of the historical body and blood of Christ, language that later theologians would develop. He also produced a lengthy commentary on the Gospel of Matthew, a commentary on Lamentations, Marian writings, and two important hagiographical lives of Adalard and Wala (the latter in dialogue form). A difference of interpretation over the Eucharist arose with his fellow monk Ratramnus.

Paschasius has been venerated as a saint, with his feast kept on 26 April. Precise years of birth and death are not recorded in contemporary sources and remain approximate; estimates locate his life between the late eighth and mid-ninth centuries. What is known of him rests chiefly on his own surviving writings and on the later traditions of Corbie. He stands as a major representative of Carolingian monastic learning, eucharistic theology, and hagiography.
