Biography
Pascual Penadés Jornet was a diocesan priest of the Archdiocese of Valencia in eastern Spain who was martyred during the religious persecution that accompanied the Spanish Civil War. He was born in 1874 in Benifairó de les Valls, a small town in the province of Valencia. He studied for the priesthood in the diocesan seminary and was ordained for service in his home archdiocese. He spent his ministry as a parish priest among the rural communities of the Valencian region. Contemporary biographical sources preserve few particulars of his family, education, or daily pastoral work, a situation common to many of the lesser-known clergy who later appeared on the lists of Civil War martyrs.
The political and social conflicts of early twentieth-century Spain placed the Catholic Church at the center of controversy. After the establishment of the Second Republic in 1931, anticlerical measures and popular hostility toward the clergy increased. The military uprising of July 1936 and the ensuing Civil War unleashed, in Republican-held territories such as Valencia, a systematic campaign against priests, religious, and Catholic institutions. Churches were sacked and clergy were imprisoned or executed. Father Penadés Jornet was arrested in this context and, on 8 September 1936, was shot at Paterna, a locality that became notorious as an execution ground for hundreds of victims.
Church authorities subsequently investigated the circumstances of his death and those of many fellow priests and laypeople of the Archdiocese of Valencia. The Holy See concluded that they had been killed in odium fidei. On 11 March 2001 Pope John Paul II beatified a group of 233 of these martyrs, among whom Pascual Penadés Jornet was included. He has not been canonized. Veneration of the group remains largely confined to the local Church of Valencia, and no distinctive patronages have been widely attributed to him individually.
Although the Spanish Civil War claimed thousands of clerical lives, the beatification of 2001 formed part of a series of recognitions by which the Catholic Church sought to honor those who remained faithful unto death. Pascual Penadés Jornet is therefore remembered as one of the Blessed Martyrs of Valencia of 1936. Precise information concerning the location of his remains or any later translation of relics is not readily available in standard hagiographical references.
