Biography

Short Description

Pascual Torres Lloret was a Spanish Roman Catholic layman of the Archdiocese of Valencia, remembered as one of the martyrs of the religious persecution that accompanied the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 23 January 1885 in Carcaixent (also known in older Spanish sources as Carcagente), in the province of Valencia. He earned his living as a carpenter and was a married man and father of a family. Surviving notices from the beatification process present him not as a cleric or member of a religious institute, but as an ordinary working Catholic whose public identity was bound up with parish life and lay apostolate in his hometown and region.

In the years before 1936 he was associated with Catholic Action, the principal organized lay apostolate of the period in Spain, and he was described as a man of regular sacramental practice. Like many Valencian lay faithful later proposed for beatification, he belonged to the milieu of parish sodalities and public Catholic associations that became targets once anticlerical violence intensified. The Church’s later judgment of his death treated that involvement as religious witness rather than as a political office or military role. Precise details of his childhood, the names of all household members, and the inner course of his marriage are not preserved in the widely circulated summaries; what those summaries retain is the portrait of a husband, father, and artisan known locally for Christian practice.

After the military rising of July 1936, Republican-controlled areas of the Valencian Country saw arrests, church burnings, and killings of clergy, religious, and identified lay Catholics. Torres Lloret was seized because of his faith and his known Catholic affiliations. He was put to death on 21 September 1936 at Gilet, in the province of Valencia. Contemporary martyrological lists of the archdiocese place his martyrdom there, in the same wave of killings that claimed numerous priests, religious, and other laity of Valencia that summer and autumn. As with many victims of 1936, the exact circumstances of burial are not securely recorded in public sources; remains were often interred hastily or in common graves, and no well-documented shrine tomb is attached to his name in standard notices.

On 11 March 2001 Pope John Paul II beatified him in Rome as one of the 233 martyrs of the Archdiocese of Valencia, a group commonly titled Blessed José Aparicio Sanz and 232 companions. That ceremony was, at the time, the largest single beatification of Spanish Civil War victims. The Holy See presented the group as having died in odium fidei. Torres Lloret has not been canonized. He is commemorated with those companions; his individual memoria is also associated with 21 September, the date given for his death. Beyond the skeletal facts of birth, family state, trade, arrest, and martyrdom, the historical record available in reliable published summaries remains thin, which is typical for a working layman whose fame rests on the diocesan causa rather than on a contemporary literary vita.
