Short Description

Saint Paternus, known in French as Saint Pair or Saint Paterne, is the name attached to a sixth-century monk and bishop of Avranches in Normandy, and also, in overlapping medieval tradition, to one or more holy men of Wales and Brittany. The Latin name Paternus corresponds to Welsh Padarn and Breton Patern or Padern. Later vitae, written well after the lifetimes of these figures, freely combined their stories, so that a single composite legend came to include a birth at Poitiers, a monastic formation in Poitou, a sojourn in Wales, foundations in Brittany, and an episcopal career at Avranches. Modern historians generally distinguish at least two cults: that of a bishop-monk honoured at Avranches and at the coastal site of Scissy (later Saint-Pair-sur-Mer), and that of Padarn, founder of the monastery of Llanbadarn Fawr in Ceredigion, sometimes also identified with a bishop of Vannes. No contemporary writings by any of these men survive, and precise years of birth and death are not independently documented.

According to the traditional account of the Avranches saint, Paternus was born at Poitiers in Aquitaine. His father is named in the legend as Patranus or Petranus and is said to have gone with his wife to Ireland, where he died. As a young man Paternus entered monastic life at a house in Poitou commonly called Ansion (or associated with Tincillac). After some years he withdrew, together with a companion named Scubilio (later venerated as Saint Scubilion), to the Cotentin peninsula. They settled as hermits at Scissy on the Channel coast, attracted disciples, and established a small monastic community. This eremitical phase belongs to the wider sixth-century pattern of Gallic monasticism in the generations after Martin of Tours and the island and forest hermits of Merovingian Gaul, rather than to any later named religious order. Claims that Paternus was a Benedictine are anachronistic.

In the middle of the sixth century Paternus was chosen bishop of Avranches. Hagiographical texts state that he was consecrated in the time of Germanus of Paris, but the internal chronology of the vita is not consistent and should be treated with caution. As bishop he is credited with the pastoral care of a still poorly Christianized diocese, with the encouragement of monastic life, and with missionary activity in the surrounding countryside. He is not recorded as having married or as having had children; the sources present him throughout as a monk-bishop. His death is placed by later tradition in the mid-560s, either at Avranches or at his former hermitage. The principal centre of his cult became Scissy, which took his name as Saint-Pair-sur-Mer, where his relics were honoured. He was never Bishop of Rome or a patriarch of an Eastern see. His recognition as a saint belongs to the pre-congregation period of popular cult and local episcopal approval, not to a formal papal canonization or beatification whose agent can be named.

A distinct feast on 15 April belongs to Padarn of Wales and to Paternus of Vannes in Breton calendars, while the Roman Martyrology and the Avranches tradition keep Paternus of Avranches on 16 April. Medieval writers frequently merged the Welsh founder, the Breton bishop, and the Norman hermit-bishop into one itinerant saint who travelled between Ireland, Wales, Brittany, and Neustria. That literary conflation explains why journeys to Britain and Armorica appear in some lives of the Avranches Paternus, and why the same Latin name covers several regional patrons. What can be said with reasonable confidence is that an early cult of a holy bishop named Paternus existed at Avranches and on the Cotentin coast, and that a monastic founder named Padarn was remembered at Llanbadarn Fawr. Paternus of Avranches is invoked as patron of Avranches and of Saint-Pair-sur-Mer. Beyond those local dedications, a broader list of patronages is not securely attested in early sources.
