Biography

Short Description

Patiens (also known as Patient or Patientius; in French, Saint Patient) was bishop of Lyon (ancient Lugdunum) in fifth-century Gaul. He is generally held to have succeeded Saint Eucherius in that see around the middle of the century, after Eucherius's death circa 449. Nothing reliable is known of his parentage, birthplace, or early career; the historical record begins with his episcopate. Lyon remained a major ecclesiastical and civic centre, even as imperial administration in Gaul gave way to Burgundian rule. Later episcopal catalogues place Patiens among the principal bishops of the see, but they do not preserve a documented year of birth, and modern lists disagree on the exact close of his tenure.

The chief contemporary witness is Sidonius Apollinaris, the Gallo-Roman aristocrat, poet, and later bishop of Clermont, who addressed Patiens in a letter of sustained praise (Epistulae 6.12) and also wrote verses on a church Patiens restored. Sidonius presents him as a model pastor: open-handed, hospitable, and willing to spend private wealth on public and ecclesiastical needs. He describes Patiens's house as a place of welcome for travellers and the needy. Because this testimony comes from a living correspondent rather than from a later legend, it is the foundation of all subsequent accounts of the bishop's character.

Patiens is especially remembered for famine relief. When scarcity struck the Rhône valley and neighbouring districts, he bought grain at his own expense and distributed it not only in Lyon but to a number of other cities. Sidonius names communities along the Rhône and in the Auvergne among those that received this aid. The same sources credit Patiens with restoring the cathedral church of Lyon, which had fallen into disrepair, and with decorating it on a grand scale. Sidonius's poem on the rebuilt church is the main evidence for that building campaign. These acts of charity and church patronage, rather than miracles or a detailed vita, are what later liturgical tradition retained.

The precise year of his death is not securely established. Older Catholic handbooks often give a date around 480; some episcopal catalogues extend his tenure into the last decade of the fifth century, immediately before Rusticus of Lyon. He appears to have died in office at Lyon. Later martyrologies, including the Roman Martyrology, commemorate him on 11 September as a bishop of Lyon. His cult is that of an early Gallic confessor-bishop, recognised by popular and liturgical veneration rather than by a medieval papal process of canonization. No reliable evidence survives of a spouse, children, or membership in a later religious order.
