Biography

Short Description

Patriarch Joachim, conventionally numbered Joachim I in the succession of the Greek Orthodox Church of Alexandria, held the ancient see associated with Saint Mark from the later 1480s until 1567. Traditional catalogues of the patriarchate assign him a tenure from about 1486 or 1487 to his death in 1567, a span of some eight decades that would rank among the longest episcopates in Christian history. That extraordinary length has occasionally led historians to wonder whether the lists might conceal more than one hierarch of the same name, but the received tradition of the Alexandrian church treats him as a single figure. Later Greek ecclesiastical writers identify him as a native of Athens who had taken monastic vows, and some accounts associate him with the Monastery of Saint Catherine on Mount Sinai, a house long tied to the Alexandrian church. No securely documented year of birth survives; figures sometimes offered in later compilations would imply an implausible lifespan if combined with a death in 1567, and they are therefore set aside here.

When Joachim became patriarch, Egypt was still under the Mamluk Sultanate, which regulated Coptic and Greek (Melkite) Christians through the customary dhimmi framework centered on Cairo. The Greek Orthodox community in Egypt was small beside the Coptic Church, yet it kept the Byzantine liturgical rite, rejected the Union of Florence in company with the other Eastern patriarchates, and continued to claim the succession of the evangelist Mark. In 1517 Sultan Selim I defeated the Mamluks and annexed Egypt to the Ottoman Empire. The Orthodox of Egypt were thereafter drawn into the Ottoman millet system. The Patriarch of Alexandria remained the canonical head of his flock in Egypt and, in principle, of Orthodox Christians in Libya, Pentapolis, and farther into Africa, while everyday survival required negotiation with Ottoman governors and with the Patriarchate of Constantinople, whose ethnarchic role in the empire was far stronger.

A celebrated legend, preserved in later Orthodox narratives rather than in strictly contemporary Ottoman or patriarchal archives, associates Joachim with a public ordeal that supposedly secured imperial favor for the Christians of Egypt. In this account a hostile courtier or a Jewish physician challenged the patriarch to prove the power of the Christian faith by drinking poison. Joachim is said to have signed the cup with the cross, drunk it without harm, and thereby moved the sultan or his officials to confirm the privileges of the Church. The story belongs to a familiar type of miracle-and-ordeal tale used to explain the endurance of Christian communities under Islamic rule; it cannot be verified as historical fact and should be read as hagiography. It did, however, shape Joachim’s later reputation in Greek Orthodox memory connected with Alexandria and Sinai.

Administratively, the sixteenth-century Greek Patriarchate of Alexandria was a modest institution. It maintained churches and monastic houses in Alexandria, Cairo, and a few other localities, preserved Greek liturgical and educational life for merchants, monks, and officials, and asserted historic rights vis-à-vis the larger Coptic hierarchy and the Latin presence that had grown during the Crusades and the Venetian commercial era. Published documentation of Joachim’s specific acts—synods, ordinations, building work, or correspondence—is limited. He died in 1567, still in office according to the traditional chronology, and was followed after a short interval by Patriarch Silvester. Neither a precise place of burial nor a formal liturgical feast in the universal Orthodox calendar is securely attested. Joachim is remembered less as a canonized wonderworker with a fixed cult than as the long-serving primate who steered the Greek Church of Alexandria through the passage from Mamluk to Ottoman rule.
