Biography

Short Description

Patrick Joseph Peyton was born on 9 January 1909 in Attymass, County Mayo, in the west of Ireland, one of nine children of John and Mary Peyton. The family lived in modest circumstances on a small farm and practiced a traditional Irish Catholic piety in which the daily recitation of the Rosary occupied a central place. After local schooling, economic hardship and the example of an older brother led him to leave Ireland. In 1928 he and his brother Thomas emigrated to the United States and settled in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Patrick found work as a caretaker and sexton at St. Peter's Cathedral, where contact with the clergy and the liturgical life of the cathedral strengthened his desire to become a priest.

He entered the Congregation of Holy Cross and was sent to study at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. In the late 1930s, while still a seminarian, he developed a grave pulmonary illness diagnosed as tuberculosis. Physicians considered his condition critical and his prospects for ordination doubtful. Peyton later recounted that he prayed the Rosary and entrusted himself to the Blessed Virgin Mary; he regarded his subsequent recovery as an answer to that prayer, and the episode became the foundation of his later apostolate. He was ordained a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross on 15 June 1941. Soon afterward he conceived a campaign to restore family prayer, especially the Rosary, in Catholic homes.

From a small beginning he launched what became known as the Family Rosary Crusade. He coined and tirelessly repeated the phrase "The family that prays together stays together." Beginning in the 1940s he organized diocesan and national Rosary rallies that filled stadiums and public squares in the United States, Canada, Latin America, the Philippines, Spain, and other countries; some gatherings drew crowds estimated in the hundreds of thousands. In 1947 he founded Family Theater Productions in Hollywood, recruiting well-known film and radio personalities for programs that promoted prayer, morality, and family unity. Those productions were broadcast widely on radio and later television and formed a distinctive Catholic presence in mid-twentieth-century American popular media.

Peyton spent the remaining decades of his life traveling, preaching, and overseeing the crusade and its media work. He remained a religious priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross and never held episcopal office. He died on 3 June 1992 in San Pedro, California, at the age of eighty-three. A canonical process for his beatification was opened in 2001. On 18 December 2017 Pope Francis authorized a decree recognizing his heroic virtues, granting him the title Venerable. He has not been beatified or canonized.
