Biography

Short Description

Saint Patroclus of Troyes, known in French as Patrocle and in German as Patroklus, was a Christian martyr of the third century whose memory is tied to Troyes in Champagne and, from the tenth century onward, to Soest in Westphalia. Almost everything reported about his life comes from later hagiography rather than from contemporary documents. The traditional account describes him as a wealthy native of Troyes in Roman Gaul, conspicuous for charity to the poor and for an openly Christian life during a period when imperial officials still punished the public profession of Christianity. Modern scholars treat the surviving passio as a pious narrative composed well after the events it claims to describe: it preserves the outline of a local martyr cult while adding stock miraculous episodes and at least one serious chronological inconsistency.

The legend places his arrest and execution in the mid-third century, a date commonly given as about 259, and names the emperor Aurelian as the magistrate who condemned him. That identification is historically awkward, because Aurelian reigned from 270 to 275, whereas 259 falls in the reigns of Valerian and Gallienus; the mismatch is one of the reasons the acts are regarded as legendary rather than as a reliable trial record. In the story Patroclus refused to sacrifice to the pagan gods. He is said to have been tortured and, in one widespread episode, thrown into a fire from which he emerged unharmed, after which he was led outside the city and beheaded. Local tradition identifies the place of martyrdom with the later village of Saint-Parres-lès-Troyes, southeast of Troyes, whose name is derived from his. No independent third-century source confirms these details, and nothing certain is known of his family, any marriage, or children; the texts are silent on those points. He appears as a layman, not as a bishop or a member of a religious order.

A cult formed at Troyes after his death. In 960 Bruno the Great, Archbishop of Cologne and brother of Emperor Otto I, translated relics of the saint from Troyes to Soest in Westphalia. That Ottonian translation created a major shrine: the Romanesque collegiate church known as the Patrokli-Dom was built in Soest to house the relics and became the centre of his veneration in the German-speaking world. He is honoured as the patron saint of Soest. In the Roman Martyrology his feast is kept on 21 January. Like other ancient martyrs he was venerated liturgically long before the later medieval and modern processes of beatification and canonization, and no individual pope is recorded as having formally canonized him.

His historical importance therefore rests less on a reconstructable biography than on the early medieval cult at Troyes and on the tenth-century translation that made him one of the principal saints of Westphalia. The year of death 259 is the conventional date given in martyrologies and standard reference works; it should be read as a traditional figure attached to a legendary passio, not as a date fixed by contemporary evidence.
