Biography

Short Description

Saint Patroclus of Troyes is venerated as a third-century Christian martyr. Traditional hagiography, based on a Latin passion narrative of uncertain date and legendary character, presents him as a native of Troyes in Roman Gaul, born into a wealthy and distinguished family. He is said to have used his fortune for charitable works, supporting the poor and living according to Christian precepts at a time when the imperial cult and traditional Roman religion still dominated public life in the cities of Gaul.

According to the same legendary account, Patroclus was arrested during a persecution of Christians customarily assigned to the reign of the emperor Aurelian in the 270s. Interrogated by a Roman official, he refused to offer sacrifice to the pagan gods. After torture he was condemned and beheaded. The precise chronology cannot be confirmed by independent historical sources, and modern critical hagiography treats the details of the trial and death as unhistorical elaborations. What can be affirmed is that a martyr named Patroclus was honored at Troyes from an early date.

The cult remained centered on Troyes until the tenth century. Around the year 960 Archbishop Bruno of Cologne obtained relics of the saint and had them translated to Soest in Westphalia. This translation, carried out in the Ottonian period, established Soest as the principal center of the cult. A major collegiate church, the Patrokli-Dom, was erected over the relics and became one of the outstanding Romanesque buildings of the region. Saint Patroclus has been regarded as the patron of the city of Soest ever since.

The Roman Martyrology records his feast on 21 January, identifying him as a martyr of Troyes in Gaul. Because he belongs to the age of the ancient martyrs, he was never the subject of a formal papal canonization process of the later medieval type; his public cult is of great antiquity and was received by the Church. No reliable evidence indicates that he belonged to a religious order, held high ecclesiastical office, or was married. The historical person behind the legend remains obscure, yet the endurance of his veneration, especially in Westphalia, testifies to the importance of relic translations in the religious life of early medieval Germany.
