Biography

Short Description

Paul Hŏ Hyŏb (also rendered Paul Heo Hyeop in other romanization systems) was a nineteenth-century Korean Catholic layman who died for his faith during the Joseon dynasty’s anti-Christian persecutions and is venerated as one of the 103 Martyrs of Korea. He belongs to the large group of mostly lay believers who formed the backbone of the early Korean Church. Unlike most mission territories, Catholicism in Korea was introduced by Koreans themselves: in the 1780s, members of the yangban scholarly class studying in Beijing encountered Jesuit writings, were baptized, and returned to baptize others, creating a community that existed for years without ordained priests.

This lay-led church grew rapidly but repeatedly collided with the Neo-Confucian state ideology of Joseon. Refusal to perform ancestral rites was interpreted as unfilial and subversive; the egalitarian implications of Christian teaching threatened the rigid class system; and contacts with foreigners raised suspicions of treason. Major persecutions occurred in 1801, 1839, 1846 and 1866. The Gihae persecution that began in 1839, during the reign of the young King Heonjong and under the influence of conservative court factions, was especially thorough. Catholic communities in the capital and the provinces were raided, and prisoners were brought to Seoul for interrogation by the State Tribunal.

Traditional hagiographical accounts state that Paul Hŏ Hyŏb was born in 1796, possibly in Chungcheong province. He became a catechist, a role of great importance in a church that still had only a handful of priests. Catechists taught doctrine, prepared candidates for baptism, led prayers, and held the community together in the long intervals between rare visits by clergy. During the Gihae persecution he was arrested, subjected to the judicial torture intended to produce apostasy and denunciations of fellow believers, and remained constant. He was beheaded at the Seosomun execution ground in Seoul on 30 January 1840, one of a series of executions that continued from 1839 into the early months of the following year.

Relatively little personal detail about Hŏ Hyŏb survives beyond his name, his status as a married lay catechist, and the fact of his martyrdom. The Korean Church’s early records and the later processes of beatification focused on establishing death in odium fidei rather than compiling extensive individual vitae for every one of the dozens of lay victims. After religious freedom was gradually obtained in the late nineteenth century, the memory of the martyrs was carefully preserved. Seventy-nine of them, including those of the 1839–1840 persecution, were beatified by Pope Pius XI on 5 July 1925. The entire group of 103 was canonized by Pope John Paul II on 6 May 1984 in Seoul, in the first canonization ceremony held outside Rome. They are commemorated collectively on 20 September, and their witness is regarded as foundational to the identity of the Catholic Church in Korea.
