Biography

Short Description

Paul III (Greek: Παῦλος) was Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople from 688 until 694. Virtually nothing can be established about his birth, family, education, or career before he occupied the patriarchal throne. He is known to historians almost solely from the dates of his tenure and from the ecclesiastical legislation enacted while he held the see. His patriarchate fell entirely within the first reign of Emperor Justinian II (685–695), in the generation after the Sixth Ecumenical Council (Constantinople III, 680–681), which had defined the doctrine of two wills in Christ and condemned monothelitism. He succeeded in a line of late-seventh-century patriarchs whose terms were often short and poorly documented in the surviving chronicles.

The defining event of his time in office was the Council in Trullo, or Quinisext Council, summoned by Justinian II and held in 691–692 in the domed hall of the imperial palace at Constantinople. The gathering took its name from that hall (trullos) and was intended to supply the disciplinary canons that the Fifth and Sixth Ecumenical Councils had not issued. One hundred and two canons were promulgated, covering clerical and monastic discipline, marriage, liturgy, and various social and moral questions. As bishop of the capital, Paul III was the principal hierarch associated with the synod and is recorded among those who subscribed its acts. Several canons diverged from Roman practice, notably on clerical marriage and on fasting, and Pope Sergius I refused to accept them. The council therefore never obtained ecumenical status in the Latin West, while in the Byzantine East its canons became a foundation of later canon law.

Little else about Paul III’s administration is preserved. The late seventh century was a period of imperial assertion over the church, of strained relations with Rome, and of military pressure from the Umayyad Caliphate and from Slavic groups in the Balkans. Byzantine chronicles of the era, including later compilations such as that of Theophanes, give only sparse notices of patriarchal successions and do not supply a personal portrait of Paul III. No contemporary vita, letters, or theological treatises attributed to him are known to survive. His origins, possible monastic background, and any activity outside the Trullo legislation remain unknown.

Paul III died in 694 and was succeeded by Callinicus I. His place of death and burial are not recorded in the sources ordinarily used for this period. Later calendars and hagiographical collections do not furnish a securely attested feast day or cult that can be verified from standard historical references. He remains an obscure figure whose historical importance rests on the coincidence of his patriarchate with the Quinisext legislation rather than on any well-documented personal career.
