Biography

Short Description

Paul Joseph Nardini was born on 25 July 1821 in Germersheim, in the Rhenish Palatinate, then a territory of the Kingdom of Bavaria. He was the illegitimate child of Margareta Lichtenberger, a young unmarried woman, and was baptized shortly after birth. Poverty and the social disadvantages attached to illegitimate birth shaped his early years. He was brought up by his maternal grandparents and later by an aunt, and local clergy who noticed his ability and religious disposition helped him obtain an education. He attended school in the Palatinate and the gymnasium in Speyer, studied philosophy and theology (including at the University of Munich), and completed seminary formation for the Diocese of Speyer.

He was ordained a priest in 1846 and served as a chaplain in several Palatine parishes, among them Frankenthal. In 1851 he became parish priest of Pirmasens, a growing industrial town whose shoe factories employed many poor workers. There he found neglected children, inadequate nursing of the sick, and widespread material want. He organized charitable institutions, including care for small children whose parents were at work, and he sought the help of women religious. After Sisters of the Most Holy Redeemer from Niederbronn, whom he had brought to the town, had to withdraw, he founded in 1855 a new community, the Poor Franciscan Sisters of the Holy Family, often called the Nardini Sisters. The first members were local women who embraced a simple, Franciscan-inspired life of poverty and service to children, the ill, and the destitute.

Nardini himself remained a diocesan priest of Speyer and did not enter a religious order. He was noted for personal austerity, preaching, and direct care of the poor, and he guided the young congregation while carrying out ordinary parochial duties. During the winter of 1861–1862 he contracted pulmonary typhus while attending the sick in an epidemic. He died in Pirmasens on 27 January 1862, at the age of forty. The sisterhood he had founded continued after his death, later received further ecclesiastical approval, and spread beyond the Palatinate.

The cause of beatification was taken up in the twentieth century. After a decree recognizing his heroic virtue, a miracle attributed to his intercession was approved. On 22 October 2006 he was beatified at Speyer Cathedral; Cardinal José Saraiva Martins, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, presided in the name of Pope Benedict XVI. His feast is observed on 27 January. He has not been canonized. Veneration is centered in the Diocese of Speyer and among the Poor Franciscan Sisters of the Holy Family, whose motherhouse in Pirmasens preserves his memory and burial.
