Biography

Short Description

Paul the Apostle, known in his earlier life as Saul of Tarsus, was a first-century Jewish preacher whose letters and missionary activity became foundational for the Christian movement. He was born in Tarsus, a Hellenistic city in the Roman province of Cilicia in Asia Minor, into a family of the tribe of Benjamin. He was a Jew and, by his own later testimony, a Pharisee, and he also possessed Roman citizenship by birth, a status that would later shape his legal appeals. According to the Acts of the Apostles he was educated in Jerusalem in the school of Gamaliel. In his own letters he describes an earlier zeal for ancestral traditions that led him to persecute the assemblies of those who proclaimed Jesus as Messiah. Acts places him as a consenting witness at the killing of Stephen in Jerusalem. Neither his letters nor Acts give a precise year of birth; modern estimates cluster in the first decades of the first century and remain conjectural.

The decisive turn in his life is described both in Acts (in three slightly varying narratives) and, more briefly, in his own letters, especially Galatians and 1 Corinthians. While traveling toward Damascus in order to seize followers of Jesus, he experienced a revelation of the risen Christ that he treated as the ground of his apostleship. He did not immediately join the Jerusalem community as a subordinate; Galatians states that he went into Arabia, returned to Damascus, and only after three years went up to Jerusalem to meet Cephas (Peter) and James the Lord’s brother. A later visit, after fourteen years, involved Barnabas and Titus and concerned the terms on which Gentiles might belong to the people of God. Paul insisted that Gentile believers were not to be compelled to accept circumcision or the full yoke of the Mosaic law. The so-called Apostolic Council in Jerusalem, reported in Acts 15 and reflected in Galatians 2, provisionally settled that dispute, though conflict continued, including a public confrontation with Peter at Antioch over table fellowship with Gentiles.

With Barnabas, and later with Silas, Timothy, Titus, and others, Paul undertook extended missionary journeys through Cyprus, southern and western Asia Minor, Macedonia, and Achaia. He founded or consolidated assemblies in Philippi, Thessalonica, Corinth, Ephesus, and other cities, often beginning in synagogues and then turning to God-fearers and Gentiles. He supported himself at least in part by the trade of tentmaking. His undisputed letters—Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Philippians, 1 Thessalonians, and Philemon—are among the earliest surviving Christian documents and form a large part of the New Testament. In them he develops a theology of God’s righteousness revealed apart from the law, justification by faith in Jesus Christ, the church as one body in which Jew and Gentile are united, baptism as participation in Christ’s death and resurrection, and an imminent expectation of the Lord’s return. Other letters in the Pauline corpus (Colossians, Ephesians, 2 Thessalonians, and the Pastoral Epistles) are of disputed authorship and are often dated later by critical scholarship; they nonetheless belong to the Pauline tradition that shaped subsequent churches.

Acts narrates his arrest in Jerusalem after a riot in the Temple, a prolonged detention under Roman governors in Caesarea, and an appeal to the emperor that brought him as a prisoner to Rome. His own letter to the Romans, written earlier from the Corinthian sphere, already contemplated a visit to Rome and a further journey to Spain. First Clement, a Roman writing from the end of the first century, speaks of Paul as having reached the limits of the West and as having borne witness unto death. Later Christian tradition, from the second century onward, holds that he was beheaded at Rome during the reign of Nero, as a Roman citizen, on the Ostian Way, and that he was buried outside the walls on the road to Ostia. The precise year is not recorded in contemporary sources; ecclesiastical historians such as Eusebius placed the martyrdom in the mid-60s of the first century. A sarcophagus beneath the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls has been venerated as his tomb since late antiquity; excavations in the early twenty-first century confirmed a Roman-era burial at that site, though identification remains a matter of tradition rather than forensic proof.

Paul was never Bishop of Rome, nor did he hold any later patriarchal see; his authority in the churches was that of an apostle to the Gentiles, claimed on the basis of the Damascus revelation and of the communities he founded. He presents himself in 1 Corinthians as unmarried and recommends that state to others, though without imposing it. No ancient source records a wife or children. Veneration of Paul is apostolic and pre-congregational; there was no later papal canonization. In the Roman calendar he is commemorated with Peter on 29 June and in the feast of his conversion on 25 January. Eastern churches likewise honor him among the foremost apostles. His letters remain central to Christian doctrine, ethics, and missionary self-understanding, and he is invoked as patron of missionaries, theologians, tentmakers, and of Malta (from the shipwreck narrative in Acts) and, together with Peter, of the city of Rome.
