Biography

Short Description

Paula Frassinetti (Italian: Paola Frassinetti) was born on 3 March 1809 in Genoa, then under Napoleonic administration and later part of the Kingdom of Sardinia. She was the only daughter of Giovanni Battista Frassinetti, a cloth merchant, and Angela Viale, and grew up with four brothers. One brother, Giuseppe Frassinetti, became a priest, pastor, and spiritual writer of some standing in nineteenth-century Liguria. When Paula was nine years old her mother died, and she took on the practical running of the household and a share in raising her siblings. She was educated at home rather than in a convent boarding school. Family piety, domestic labor, and a reserved but steady life of prayer formed her early years; accounts of her youth stress industry, charity toward the poor of Genoa, and an absence of social pretension.

As a young adult she went to the Ligurian coastal parish of Quinto al Mare to keep house for her brother Giuseppe, who served there as a priest. While managing his household she began to gather girls for catechism and elementary instruction, filling a need among families who could not use existing schools. The educational apostolate known as the Work of Saint Dorothy, associated with the priest Luca Passi, helped give shape to her vocation. On 12 August 1834 she and a small group of companions began a religious community dedicated to that work, the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Dorothy. The sisters lived a simple common life, taught poor and working-class girls, prepared children for the sacraments, and placed themselves under diocesan authority while seeking a stable rule. Frassinetti served as superior, forming novices and opening further houses as requests for teachers increased.

Under her government the congregation spread from Liguria into other parts of Italy and established a principal house in Rome, which became the seat of the institute. She directed this growth through the political upheavals of the Risorgimento and the changing status of the Papal States, insisting on humility, obedience to the Church, and trust in providence rather than on public prominence. The Holy See granted recognition to the congregation during the pontificate of Pius IX, confirming its educational purpose. The sisters taught in schools and oratories and combined classroom work with charitable visiting. During her lifetime the institute also began to look beyond Italy, so that the Dorothean charism would not remain a purely Ligurian foundation. Those who knew her described an ordinary manner, patience in recurring illness, and a refusal to let the role of foundress become a cult of personality.

In her later years she resided mainly in Rome and continued to govern despite declining health. She died in Rome on 11 June 1882. Devotion to her developed first among her sisters and the families they served. She was beatified by Pope Pius XI on 8 June 1930 and canonized by Pope John Paul II on 11 March 1984. The Catholic Church observes her feast on 11 June. The Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Dorothy has continued her educational and pastoral work in a number of countries, and her remains are preserved for veneration at the generalate of the congregation in Rome.
