Biography

Short Description

Paulus Hungarus, known in later literature as Paul the Hungarian, was a canonist and Dominican friar of the thirteenth century whose career linked the law schools of northern Italy with the earliest expansion of the Order of Preachers into the Kingdom of Hungary. Nothing reliable is recorded of the date or precise place of his birth. His byname Hungarus, used in university and order sources, indicates that he came from the Hungarian kingdom. By the later 1210s he was teaching canon law at Bologna, then the principal European centre for the academic study of the decretals and of Gratian's Concordia discordantium canonum. As a master in that faculty he belonged to the generation of jurists who worked with the early thirteenth-century compilationes antiquae before the promulgation of the Liber Extra of Gregory IX in 1234.

In or about 1221 Paulus entered the Order of Preachers. Dominican memory associates his conversion to the religious life with the presence of Saint Dominic in Bologna and with the second general chapter of the order, held in that city in 1221, at which the friars decided to send a mission to Hungary. Paulus was placed at the head of that mission and became the first provincial of the newly erected Hungarian province. In that office he oversaw the foundation of Dominican convents in the kingdom and the beginning of an organized preaching and teaching apostolate among clergy and laity. The Hungarian province was one of the earliest territorial structures of the order outside the original Mediterranean and French heartlands, and Paulus's priorate therefore occupies a documented place in the first expansion of the Dominicans into Central Europe.

Paulus Hungarus is also remembered as a writer on canon law and pastoral practice. He is credited with notabilia, or brief apparatus, on collections of decretals, and with a summa dealing with penance and confession, composed for the use of friars engaged in the ministry of the internal forum. Such manuals were characteristic of the first Dominican generation, which sought to combine university learning with the practical needs of itinerant preachers and confessors. His legal work thus stands at the intersection of Bolognese jurisprudence and the pastoral programme of the Order of Preachers in the decades after its confirmation by Honorius III.

Traditional Dominican historiography records that Paulus Hungarus died in 1241, during the Mongol invasion of Hungary. In that year invading armies devastated large parts of the kingdom, and numerous monasteries and convents, including houses of the Friars Preachers, were destroyed; later order chronicles number many Hungarian Dominicans among the dead. Contemporary narrative sources do not describe the precise circumstances or place of Paulus's death, and no burial site is securely identified. He was not the subject of a formal papal canonization or beatification in the later medieval or modern sense, nor is a universal feast day attached to his name. His historical importance rests on his role as the first Dominican provincial of Hungary and on his contribution, as a Bolognese-trained canonist, to the early legal and penitential literature of the order.
