Biography

Short Description

Pavol Peter Gojdič was born on 17 July 1888 in Ruské Pekľany, a village in the Šariš region of the Kingdom of Hungary, then part of Austria-Hungary and now in eastern Slovakia. He belonged to a Greek Catholic clerical family; his father, Štefan Gojdič, was a priest of the Byzantine rite. After secondary studies in Prešov he studied theology in Prešov and Budapest and was ordained a priest on 27 August 1911 for the Eparchy of Prešov. He then served in parish work and in eparchial administration, including as prefect of an eparchial student residence and as a curial official. In 1922 he entered the Order of Saint Basil the Great (the Basilian Order of Saint Josaphat), taking the monastic name Pavel.

Appointed apostolic administrator of the Greek Catholic Eparchy of Prešov in 1926, he was consecrated a bishop on 25 March 1927. He led the eparchy through the interwar years and from 1940 as its residential bishop. During the Second World War and the Slovak State he opposed racial persecution of Jews. He issued pastoral protests, helped Jewish families obtain baptismal certificates and other protection, and sought to shelter those in danger. Yad Vashem later recognized him as Righteous Among the Nations.

After the communist takeover in Czechoslovakia, the regime suppressed the Greek Catholic Church in 1950 and tried to force its clergy and faithful into the Orthodox Church. Gojdič refused to abandon communion with Rome or to submit to the state-sponsored Orthodox hierarchy. He was arrested in 1950, convicted of high treason in a 1951 show trial, and sentenced to life imprisonment. He was held in several prisons and spent his final years at Leopoldov, where fellow prisoners remembered his prayer and endurance under illness and harsh conditions. Offers of release that required him to drop his Catholic allegiance or leave the country were refused.

He died of cancer in the Leopoldov prison hospital on 17 July 1960, the seventy-second anniversary of his birth. He was first buried in the prison cemetery. In 1968 his remains were transferred to the crypt of the Greek Catholic Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Prešov. Pope John Paul II beatified him as a martyr on 4 November 2001 in Saint Peter's Square. His liturgical commemoration is kept on 17 July.
