Biography

Short Description

Pausicacus of Synada, known in Greek as Pausikakos (Παυσίκακος) and in Slavic sources as Pavsikaky of Sinad, was a late antique Christian bishop whose memory is preserved chiefly in Eastern Orthodox liturgical calendars and synaxaria. The hagiographical tradition identifies him as a native of Apamea in Syria. From childhood he was said to have been marked by piety and purity of life. He received training in medicine and employed that skill in the care of the sick. He then embraced monasticism and was later ordained a priest. The same sources credit him with a gift of healing, a theme that links his medical formation to the wonderworking reputation of his later cult. No contemporary document records his birth year, and it cannot be recovered from the surviving notices.

His elevation to the episcopate is tied to a securely dated figure: Cyriacus (Kyriakos), Patriarch of Constantinople from 595 to 606. According to the lives, this patriarch consecrated Pausicacus as bishop of Synnada (also spelled Synada), a city of Phrygia Salutaris in Asia Minor and the centre of a metropolitan see under Constantinople. As bishop he is portrayed as a conscientious shepherd and as a firm opponent of Monophysitism, which continued to divide eastern Christian communities in the sixth and early seventh centuries. The notices do not preserve acts, letters, or conciliar subscriptions in his name, so the character of his administration is known only in these general terms.

Tradition states that he died peacefully, and Orthodox compilers commonly give the year 606, coinciding with the close of Cyriacus’s patriarchate. That date belongs to the liturgical tradition rather than to an independently attested obituary and should be treated as conventional. His place of burial is not named in the standard accounts. He is commemorated on 13 May in the Eastern Orthodox Church. He did not occupy the see of Rome or any of the patriarchal thrones of the East; his office was that of metropolitan bishop of Synnada. Because the lives present him as a monk before his consecration, he is understood to have lived in celibacy. No spouse or children are recorded.

Outside the menologia, Pausicacus remains obscure. No inscriptions, imperial rescripts, or conciliar lists that can be firmly attached to him are cited in the usual historical handbooks, and modern encyclopedic treatment is correspondingly brief. Slavic hagiography transmitted his dossier under the name Pavsikaky of Sinad, and later collections such as the Prologue of Ohrid and contemporary Orthodox synaxaria reproduce the same short outline: Syrian origin, medical practice, monastic and priestly life, consecration by Patriarch Cyriacus, defence of Chalcedonian Orthodoxy, and a peaceful death at the beginning of the seventh century. Further biographical detail is not verifiable from reliable historical sources.
