Biography

Short Description

Pedro Calungsod, also recorded in Spanish missionary documents as Pedro Calonsor, was a Visayan Filipino lay catechist and martyr of the Roman Catholic Church. He was born in the Visayas in the mid-seventeenth century, when the Philippine archipelago formed part of the Spanish East Indies. Surviving records do not give a precise date or place of birth; later tradition has associated him with several Visayan localities, among them Ginatilan in Cebu, Loboc in Bohol, and communities in Iloilo and Leyte. He received Christian instruction and elementary schooling, almost certainly under Jesuit auspices in the Visayas, and as a teenager he joined the missionary enterprise of the Society of Jesus as a lay doctrinero rather than as a member of any religious order.

In 1668 the Jesuit Diego Luis de San Vitores organized an expedition from the Philippines to the Mariana Islands, then known as the Ladrones. Calungsod was one of a number of young Filipino catechists who accompanied the Jesuits. On Guam they taught doctrine, assisted at Mass, and took part in the baptism of Chamorro converts. Early results were mixed with growing hostility. Missionaries condemned practices such as infanticide, and a Chinese settler named Choco circulated the claim that baptismal water was poisonous and caused the death of infants. Some chiefs who had been baptized later rejected the new religion.

On 2 April 1672 Calungsod and San Vitores went to the village of Tumon on Guam to baptize an infant. The child's father, a chief named Matapang who had abandoned Christianity, refused permission and, with a companion named Hirao, attacked the missionaries. Contemporary Jesuit accounts state that Calungsod was first wounded by a spear while trying to shield or assist the priest and was then killed with a bladed weapon; San Vitores was murdered immediately afterward. The bodies of both men were taken out to sea and cast into the ocean so that they could not be recovered or venerated.

Jesuit letters carried news of the killings to the Philippines and to Europe, and Calungsod was remembered in mission chronicles as the young Visayan companion of San Vitores. Formal ecclesiastical recognition came centuries later. Pope John Paul II beatified him in Rome on 5 March 2000. Pope Benedict XVI canonized him on 21 October 2012. His liturgical feast is observed on 2 April. He is honored as a patron of Filipino youth, of catechists, and of altar servers, and he is the second Filipino and the first Visayan to be declared a saint of the Catholic Church.
