Biography

Short Description

Pedro Khan, known in Vietnamese as Phêrô Khanh, was a priest and martyr who lived in Vietnam during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He is recorded as having been born in 1780. Vietnam at that time was under the Nguyễn lords and, after 1802, the Nguyễn dynasty, a period marked by the expansion of Catholic missions from Europe and simultaneous resistance from the ruling elite, who associated the new religion with foreign encroachment and disruption of traditional ancestor veneration and Confucian hierarchy. Surviving records of his family, childhood, and education are extremely sparse, as is typical for most native Vietnamese clergy of this era whose lives are known chiefly through later ecclesiastical processes rather than contemporary civil archives.

As a diocesan priest of the Latin rite, Pedro Khan served the Catholic population in the vicariates of Tonkin. The Catholic community, though a minority, had grown substantially through the work of the Paris Foreign Missions Society and other groups. Periodic imperial edicts required Christians to trample on the crucifix or face punishment, and priests were particular targets because they were viewed as organizers of a prohibited religion and as linked to European powers. Khan exercised his ministry amid these conditions of intermittent but severe persecution under emperors Minh Mạng and Thiệu Trị.

In 1842, during the early years of Emperor Thiệu Trị’s reign, Pedro Khan was arrested for his priesthood and his refusal to apostatize. Traditional accounts preserved in the canonization documentation indicate that he was put to death that year, at about sixty-two years of age, by methods then commonly used against condemned Christians, including strangulation. Precise details of his trial, the exact place of execution, and his burial are poorly attested in widely available historical sources.

Together with one hundred sixteen other martyrs from Vietnam spanning the years 1745 to 1862, Pedro Khan was canonized on 19 June 1988 by Pope John Paul II. The group is venerated collectively as Saint Andrew Dung-Lac and Companions; their liturgical memorial is observed on 24 November. They are honored in a special way by the Church in Vietnam. Beyond this outline, the historical record focuses on their shared witness rather than on extensive individual biographies, reflecting both the circumstances of persecution and the nature of the surviving documentation.
