Biography

Short Description

Pedro Qui Cong Doan, known in Vietnamese as Phêrô Đoàn Công Quý (Peter Doan Cong Quy), was a nineteenth-century Vietnamese Catholic priest and martyr. He was born in 1826 in Búng, in the southern region of Vietnam then known as Cochinchina, within a local Catholic community that had grown under missionary influence but lived under the legal prohibition of Christianity by the Nguyễn emperors. The historical sources that survive for his life are relatively brief, as is the case for many of the Vietnamese martyrs, and consist largely of notices of his origin, priesthood, and death rather than an extended contemporary biography.

He was trained for the priesthood in the seminaries of southern Vietnam that had been established to form a native clergy. After ordination he served as a priest among the Catholic populations of the Mekong region. This ministry took place during the reign of Emperor Tự Đức, whose government issued edicts against Christianity and carried out campaigns of repression, especially as conflict with France intensified in the 1850s. Vietnamese priests who remained with their people after foreign missionaries were forced to flee or were themselves martyred played a central role in maintaining the sacraments and communal life of the Church.

In 1859 he was seized, imprisoned, and condemned for being a priest and for refusing apostasy. He was put to death by beheading on 31 July 1859 at Mỹ Tho. His execution belongs to a well-documented series of martyrdoms of clergy and lay Catholics in Cochinchina in that period. Later Catholic tradition has remembered him as steadfast in the face of death.

He is numbered among the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam canonized by Pope John Paul II on 19 June 1988. The group, whose members died between the early eighteenth and mid-nineteenth centuries, is honored collectively on 24 November. Individual details of beatification for each martyr vary according to the historical groups in which they were proposed, which occurred in several ceremonies between 1900 and 1951. Pedro Qui Cong Doan was a secular priest, not a member of a religious order. No reliable sources record a spouse or children, consistent with the discipline of clerical celibacy. Beyond his identity as one of the canonized Vietnamese martyrs, specific personal patronages are not independently attested in the historical record.
