Biography

Short Description

Pelágio Sauter was born Pelagius Sauter on 9 September 1878 in Hausen, in Württemberg, then part of the German Empire. He entered the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (the Redemptorists), the missionary order founded in the eighteenth century by Saint Alphonsus Liguori, completed his religious and priestly formation in Germany, and was ordained a priest. Like a number of German Redemptorists of his generation, he was assigned to the Brazilian missions rather than to a European province, and he spent the greater part of his priestly life in Brazil. He became known there under the Portuguese form of his name, Pelágio.

His ministry was concentrated in the state of Goiás, in the Brazilian interior, a region still marked in the early twentieth century by long distances, sparse clergy, and largely rural Catholic populations. The Redemptorists had been entrusted with pastoral work in that area and with the shrine of the Divino Pai Eterno (Divine Eternal Father) at Trindade, which grew into one of Brazil’s major pilgrimage centres. Sauter was not a bishop or a diocesan administrator; contemporary and later local memory presents him as a missionary priest distinguished by long hours in the confessional, visits to the sick and to isolated communities, and a simple personal life. He became a familiar figure among the faithful of Goiás, especially in connection with Redemptorist houses serving Trindade and the district of Campinas, later absorbed into the expanding city of Goiânia.

The later decades of his work coincided with major changes in the region, including the founding of Goiânia as the new state capital in the 1930s and the continued growth of the Trindade pilgrimage. He remained with the Redemptorist communities of Goiás through those years. Popular devotion in the region associated him with spiritual counsel and with favours attributed to his prayers, as often happens around priests reputed for holiness, but such reports belong to local memory and have not been the subject of a completed canonical judgment of miracles.

Sauter died in Goiânia on 3 November 1961, in old age, after decades of missionary work in Brazil. A reputation for sanctity persisted after his death, and ecclesiastical authorities in Goiás, together with the Redemptorists, opened a cause for his beatification, so that he is known in Catholic usage as a Servant of God. He has not been beatified or canonized, and he has no universal feast day or officially assigned patronages. His historical importance lies in the long Redemptorist presence in Goiás and in the local remembrance of a German-born missionary priest who became part of popular Catholicism in central Brazil in the first two-thirds of the twentieth century.
