Biography
Peleusius the Priest appears in no securely attested entry within the principal martyrologies, synaxaria, or ecclesiastical histories that form the backbone of early Christian hagiography. Neither Eusebius of Caesarea nor the compilers of the Hieronymian Martyrology nor the later Roman, Byzantine, Coptic, or Syriac calendars preserve a distinct commemoration under this name that can be matched to an independent historical notice. The epithet the Priest indicates clerical status, yet supplies no diocese, no bishop to whom he was subject, and no date of ordination or death.
Because the name Peleusius is itself uncommon, it may represent a Latinized rendering of a Greek, Coptic, or Semitic personal name, but no corresponding figure, whether a martyr of the Diocletianic persecution, a participant in the Arian controversies, or a monastic founder, can be identified with confidence. Early Christian literature frequently records priests who suffered exile, forced labor in the mines of Phaeno, or death by fire, yet the surviving lists of those victims do not include a Peleusius among the named clergy.
In the absence of a feast day, a place of burial, or a patronal cult that can be traced in liturgical books or pilgrimage accounts, it is impossible to reconstruct even a skeletal vita. Later local traditions sometimes attach otherwise unknown names to particular churches or relics; if such a tradition once existed for Peleusius, it has left no trace in the sources available for historical verification. Consequently every biographical particular, year and place of birth, circumstances of ministry, manner of death, and subsequent veneration, must be left blank.
This notice therefore serves only to register the existence of the designation Peleusius the Priest and to record that, on present evidence, the individual remains historically unattested beyond that title.
