Biography
Pere Tarrés i Claret was born on 30 May 1905 in Manresa, in Catalonia, Spain, and was raised in a Catholic family. After his early schooling he studied medicine at the University of Barcelona and qualified as a physician in 1928. He then practiced in Barcelona, giving particular attention to patients of modest means who otherwise had little access to care. Alongside his professional work he took part in the Catalan Catholic lay apostolate, especially Catholic Action and Christian youth associations, and he became known as a doctor whose medical practice was joined to a regular life of prayer and the sacraments.
The Spanish Civil War of 1936–1939 placed Catalonia in a zone of intense anticlerical violence. Tarrés, still a layman, was mobilized for military medical service and continued to work as a doctor under wartime conditions. The suffering he witnessed, together with a vocation he had already been considering, led him after the war to enter the seminary of the Archdiocese of Barcelona. He was ordained a priest on 30 May 1942, his thirty-seventh birthday. He remained a diocesan priest and did not join a religious order.
In a relatively short priestly ministry he preached, heard confessions, directed retreats, and served as a spiritual guide for young people and for members of Catholic Action in the Barcelona of the 1940s. He also continued to show concern for the sick, drawing on his earlier medical training. Contemporaries remembered an energetic, approachable pastor attached to Eucharistic devotion and to the formation of the laity in a Church still recovering from the Civil War.
In 1950 he fell seriously ill with cancer and died in Barcelona on 31 August 1950, at the age of forty-five. A reputation for holiness spread in Catalonia, and a cause for beatification was introduced. Pope John Paul II beatified him on 5 September 2004 at Loreto. His liturgical memorial is kept on 31 August. He has not been canonized, and he has not been assigned a formal list of patronages in the universal liturgical books. He is remembered as a twentieth-century Catalan physician who became a diocesan priest and as a representative figure of Catholic Action and care for the sick.
