Biography

Short Description

Saint Peregrine, known in Latin as Peregrinus, is venerated as an early Christian martyr. Reliable contemporary historical documentation concerning his life is lacking, and the details that survive come primarily from later hagiographical traditions and entries in various martyrologies. These sources, written centuries after the events they purport to describe, often blend historical memory with legendary elaboration typical of the cult of martyrs in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages. No inscription, passion narrative, or ecclesiastical history from the period of the Roman persecutions can be confidently identified as referring to this specific figure.

The name Peregrinus, meaning stranger or pilgrim in Latin, was not uncommon in the Roman world and appears in connection with several early saints. This has produced confusion among later compilers of saints’ lives and liturgical calendars. Traditions associated with a martyr of this name generally place him within the Roman Empire during one of the periods of persecution of Christians, which occurred from the first century through the early fourth century. Different local churches developed independent claims, and it is possible that more than one historical person of this name suffered martyrdom and that their memories were later conflated.

Veneration of a Saint Peregrine developed in particular communities where relics attributed to him were preserved or where churches and altars were dedicated in his honor. As with many obscure early martyrs, the growth of the cult may have been linked to the translation of relics or to a community’s need for a heavenly patron. Liturgical calendars from different regions sometimes assign different feast days, reflecting local custom rather than a single, unified historical biography. Formal canonization in the later medieval or modern sense did not apply to such figures; their recognition as saints arose from popular cult and inclusion in martyrologies.

Modern historical scholarship treats the dossier with caution. While the existence of Christians named Peregrinus who died for the faith is entirely plausible, reconstructing a coherent life—place of birth, family, office, or the precise circumstances and date of death—is not possible on the available evidence. The saint remains representative of the many early witnesses whose individual stories have been largely lost and who survive chiefly as names in the liturgical memory of the Church.
