Biography

Short Description

Perfectus (also known as Perfecto) was a Christian priest in Córdoba in al-Andalus in the mid-ninth century, when the city was the capital of the Umayyad Emirate of Córdoba. He is counted among the Martyrs of Córdoba, Christians put to death under Islamic rule whose passions were recorded by Saint Eulogius of Córdoba. Perfectus served at the basilica of Saint Acisclus, a principal Christian church in the city. Nothing reliable is known of his parentage, early life, or year of birth; the surviving narrative begins with the encounter that led to his arrest.

According to Eulogius, Muslims approached Perfectus and sought to draw him into a comparison of Christianity and Islam, asking in particular what he held concerning Jesus and concerning Muhammad. Knowing that insult to the Prophet of Islam was a capital offense under the legal order of the emirate, he at first refused to speak on that subject. His interlocutors pressed him and gave assurances that he would not be harmed for answering. Relying on that promise, he then confessed Christ as God and Savior and declared Muhammad a false prophet whose teaching had deceived many and led souls to perdition.

Those who had questioned him did not immediately bring a charge, but later denounced him to the authorities for blasphemy against Muhammad. Perfectus was arrested and imprisoned. In confinement he was urged to retract his words and to accept Islam, which he refused. He was condemned and beheaded on 18 April 850, in the reign of Emir Abd al-Rahman II. His death stands at the beginning of the series of Córdoba martyrdoms that Eulogius documented in the Memoriale sanctorum.

The Latin Church has venerated Perfectus as a martyr-saint, and his feast is kept on 18 April. No reliable source records a later papal canonization in the juridical sense that developed in the second millennium; his cult rests on Eulogius’s contemporary testimony, on local veneration in Córdoba, and on subsequent inclusion in martyrologies. The place of his burial and any later translation of relics are not securely attested in the sources commonly cited for his life.
