Biography

Short Description

Saint Peris is a poorly documented Welsh saint of the early medieval period, conventionally assigned to the sixth century. He is remembered principally as the patron of Llanberis in Gwynedd, north Wales, and of the neighbouring settlement of Nant Peris in the Llanberis Pass. The place-name Llanberis, meaning the llan or church-enclosure of Peris, and the related hydronym Llyn Peris preserve his cult in the landscape of Snowdonia. No contemporary Life, inscription, or charter mentions him, and he is known almost entirely from later medieval dedications, local tradition, and antiquarian notices.

Later tradition, recorded in the early modern period, claimed that Peris had been a cardinal of the Roman church who resigned his office and withdrew to live as a hermit among the mountains of Arfon. Scholars regard the cardinal story as legendary and anachronistic, since the later medieval college of cardinals did not exist in the age of the Celtic saints; the tale was probably invented or imported to give a remote local founder a distinguished Roman pedigree. A more modest and geographically plausible tradition simply presents him as a hermit who settled in the valley. Welsh saintly genealogies of uncertain date sometimes list Peris among the sons of the legendary chieftain Helig ap Glanawg, whose coastal lands were said to have been lost to the sea and whose children entered religion. These pedigrees are late literary constructions rather than independent historical evidence.

The principal physical foci of his cult were the churches at Llanberis and Nant Peris and the holy well Ffynnon Peris at Nant Peris. The well was visited for healing, especially in connection with children, and was counted among the notable sacred wells of north Wales. The parish church of St Peris at Llanberis occupies an early site, though the standing fabric is medieval and later; the older church in the upper valley at Nant Peris likewise bears his name. His feast is kept on 11 December. The cult remained essentially local and did not spread widely beyond the commote of Arfon and the later county of Caernarfonshire.

Because the written record is so thin, the historical existence of Peris as a single sixth-century individual cannot be demonstrated with certainty, a situation common to many minor Welsh saints. What can be said with confidence is that by the high Middle Ages a saint of this name was firmly associated with the Llanberis valley, that a well and two churches carried his dedication, and that a feast on 11 December was observed in his honour. Modern historical writing therefore treats Saint Peris as a figure of early Welsh Christianity whose memory survived in toponymy and local devotion rather than in a recoverable biography.
