Biography

Short Description

Petar I Petrović-Njegoš was born in 1747 in the village of Njeguši in the Katunska nahija of Old Montenegro, a member of the Petrović-Njegoš family that had supplied Montenegro’s prince-bishops since the early eighteenth century. He was a nephew of Metropolitan Sava Petrović-Njegoš. Formed in the Orthodox monastic culture of the highlands, he took monastic vows and was prepared for episcopal office. In 1784 he was consecrated bishop at Sremski Karlovci by Metropolitan Mojsije Putnik of the Metropolitanate of Karlovci and returned to Montenegro as metropolitan, combining spiritual jurisdiction with the traditional temporal authority of the vladika, or prince-bishop.

His reign from 1784 to 1830 was one of the longest and most consequential in early modern Montenegro. He worked to curb blood feuds among the tribes and to impose a measure of common order on a loosely confederated highland society. In 1796 Montenegrin and Brda forces under his leadership defeated Mahmut Pasha Bushatli of Shkodra at Martinići and at Krusi, where the pasha was killed. Those victories strengthened Montenegro’s hold on the Brda districts and confirmed Petar I as a military as well as an ecclesiastical leader. He issued written legal instruments, including the Zakonik of 1798 with later additions around 1803, and the Stega, a binding tribal pact, among the first general written laws of Montenegro.

Diplomatically he aligned Montenegro with Russia, from which he received recognition and decorations, while also managing relations with Austria and the changing control of the Bay of Kotor during the Napoleonic wars, when Montenegrin and Russian cooperation briefly affected the Adriatic coast. As an Orthodox bishop he lived under monastic discipline: he had no spouse and no children. Succession in the Petrović-Njegoš line passed through his kinsmen; he designated his nephew Rade Tomov, later Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, as heir.

He died in Cetinje in 1830 and was buried at the Cetinje Monastery. In 1834 he was glorified as a saint of the Serbian Orthodox Church under the name Saint Peter of Cetinje (Sveti Petar Cetinjski). His feast is observed on 18 October in the Julian calendar, corresponding to 31 October in the Gregorian calendar. He is venerated as a wonderworker, his relics are kept at Cetinje Monastery, and in Montenegrin and Serbian Orthodox tradition he is honored as a national saint and as a patron of Montenegro.
