Biography

Short Description

Peter Armengol (also known as Pedro Armengol, Pere Ermengol, and Peter Armengal) was a Catalan Mercedarian friar of the thirteenth century, traditionally born in 1238 at La Guàrdia dels Prats in the district of Tarragona, then part of the Crown of Aragon. Hagiographical accounts describe him as the son of Arnau (Arnold) Armengol, a nobleman linked in the later tradition to the lineage of the counts of Urgell and to the service of King James I of Aragon. In adolescence he abandoned that standing and joined, then led, a band of brigands in the Catalan mountains. The conversion story that became central to his legend holds that his father was sent to suppress the outlaws, captured them, and recognized his own son among the prisoners; the encounter is said to have turned Peter from robbery to repentance. Independent contemporary records of this youth are lacking, and the episode is known from later Mercedarian and local Catalan tradition rather than from thirteenth-century archival proof.

After his conversion he sought admission to the Order of Our Lady of Mercy (the Mercedarians), founded at Barcelona earlier in the same century by Peter Nolasco for the ransom of Christian captives held in Muslim lands. He is reported to have entered the order at Barcelona in the later 1250s. Mercedarians took, in addition to the ordinary religious vows, a fourth commitment to remain as hostages if ransom money ran short. In that spirit Peter is said to have worked on redemption missions in the Kingdom of Granada and in North Africa, a dangerous traffic that mixed diplomacy, almsgiving, and the risk of enslavement or death. The order’s apostolate belonged to the wider Mediterranean world of the Crown of Aragon, where warfare, piracy, and prisoner exchange were ordinary features of Christian–Muslim contact.

The episode on which his cult rests is a ransom journey to North Africa, placed by various tellings at Béjaïa (Bugia) or Algiers, in the 1260s. Having used up their funds while Christians still remained in bondage, Peter offered himself as a hostage so that a companion could return to Spain for the balance. When the money did not arrive by the stipulated time, he was condemned and hanged. Tradition holds that he was left on the gallows for several days and was found still alive when his confrere returned, a deliverance ascribed to the Blessed Virgin Mary, patroness of the Mercedarians. He was taken down and in time allowed to leave. The story is the standard subject of his iconography; it cannot be corroborated from non-hagiographical sources and should be read as the legend through which the order remembered him.

He returned to Catalonia marked, according to the same tradition, by lasting injury to the neck from the hanging, and he spent his remaining years not on further overseas missions but in the Mercedarian house at his native La Guàrdia dels Prats, in penance and prayer. He died there on 27 April 1304 and was buried locally; the tomb became a focus of popular devotion in Catalonia and within the Mercedarian Order. His cult was confirmed in 1686 under Pope Innocent XI, and he is commemorated on 27 April. Beyond this outline—noble Catalan origin, a violent youth, Mercedarian vocation, a North African ransom and reported miraculous survival of hanging, and a withdrawn death in his hometown—secure documentary detail is scarce, and much of what is repeated about him depends on later hagiography rather than on strictly contemporary evidence.
