Biography

Short Description

Pierre Louis Marie Chanel was born on 12 July 1803 in the hamlet of La Potière, in the parish of Cuet in the Ain department of eastern France, the fifth of eight children of the peasant farmers Claude-François Chanel and Marie-Anne Sibellas. As a child he worked with livestock and received his first schooling from the local parish priest, who noticed his ability and piety and directed him toward seminary studies. He entered the minor seminary at Meximieux in 1819 and later the major seminary of Brou near Bourg-en-Bresse. Ordained a priest on 15 July 1827 for the Diocese of Belley, he served at Crozet, a small parish near the Swiss border, first as curate and then as parish priest. There he became known for visiting the sick, teaching children, and restoring regular religious practice in a countryside still marked by the disruption of the French Revolution.

In 1831 he entered the Society of Mary, a recently founded congregation devoted to Mary and to missionary work. He taught at the Marist seminary in Belley and acted as a spiritual director while waiting for an overseas posting. In 1836 Pope Gregory XVI entrusted the Vicariate Apostolic of Western Oceania to the Marists. Chanel was chosen for the first missionary band, which sailed from Le Havre in December 1836 under Bishop Jean-Baptiste Pompallier. After a long voyage by way of the Canary Islands, Valparaíso, and Tahiti, he was assigned to Futuna in the Hoorn Islands, arriving in November 1837 with Marist Brother Marie-Nizier Delorme and the English layman Thomas Boag.

Futuna was split between the rival kingdoms of Sigave and Alo. Chanel settled at Poi in Alo under King Niuliki, who at first received the foreigners with interest. Conversions came slowly. Islanders remained attached to traditional religion, in which the king also functioned as high priest, and they were cautious of foreign influence. Chanel learned the Futunan language, cared for the sick, and lived in poverty. A handful of baptisms followed, including that of the king’s son Meitala, which Niuliki took as a threat to his political and religious standing. On 28 April 1841 warriors led by Musumusu, a kinsman of the king, attacked Chanel at his dwelling. He was struck with a club and killed with an axe; he was thirty-seven. Brother Marie-Nizier escaped and later gave an account of the martyrdom.

Chanel’s death became a turning point. Within about two years nearly the whole population of Futuna had accepted baptism, and the island remained Catholic. He was recognized as the protomartyr of Oceania. Pope Leo XIII beatified him on 17 November 1889, and Pope Pius XII canonized him on 12 June 1954, naming him patron of Oceania. His feast is kept on 28 April. Relics were recovered, later divided, and in part returned to Futuna; a shrine and basilica at Poi mark the site of his death and remain a place of pilgrimage. He is remembered less for rapid numerical success than for patient missionary presence, and his life is closely tied to the early Marist missions across the Pacific.
